Cornish Bakery to open in Exeter
Cornish Bakery, the independent, founder-driven company first started in Mevagissey, Cornwall, has announced that it will be coming to Exeter.
The beautiful, design-led new bakery is set to open in style on Monday 17thNovember. The company already successfully operates bakeries nearby in Sidmouth, Totnes and Taunton.
Located in a corner unit at 38 High Street, what was previously a Mountain Warehouse shop will be transformed into a stunning welcoming space for up to 46 visitors to gather and relax whilst enjoying the bakery’s range of exceptional food and drink.
More than 15 year-round local jobs will be created and the new Cornish Bakery will also be supporting the Exeter community through a partnership with a local charity, to be selected by the new bakery team.
The building’s façade will feature a warm terracotta finish, bringing both depth and sophistication to this part of the high street. Inside, guests will find a welcoming mix of generous mid-century inspired lounge and dining seating, complemented by rich leather-upholstered banquettes and lush natural planting. The airy layout will highlight sections of exposed original brickwork, while carefully designed feature walls and pendant lighting will create a calm, inviting atmosphere.
Given the company’s Cornish heritage, they always use new bakery opportunities to support committed artisan makers and designers. The new Exeter bakery will showcase original artwork by Cornwall-based designers, A-Side and feature lighting by Tom Raffield for the bakery, adding a beautifully authentic and artisanal touch to the interior.
A key feature of the new space will be the open bakery, where large, glazed panels will offer customers a clear view of the craft and care behind each bake, adding a sense of theatre to every visit. Behind the counters, the timber-trimmed tile finishes and thoughtfully detailed joinery will enhance the natural, handcrafted aesthetic that defines Cornish Bakery’s signature style.
The Carrara marble counter tops will showcase Cornish Bakery’s full range of delicious products including its award-winning pasties and sausage rolls, both lauded by The Times’ food reviewer Giles Coren. Additionally, the new bakery will sell daily crafted and baked viennoiseries and cakes alongside recently introduced runaway success options.
These include the twice-baked Pistachio Croissant, stuffed with homemade frangipane and pistachio cream and the Shakshuka Croissant, filled with lightly spiced roasted peppers and sun-dried tomatoes combined with a cheesy bechamel sauce. Additionally, the new Cornish Raspberry Crème Brûlée pastry and matcha will all feature on the menu. Hand roasted coffee will be served from the La Marzocco coffee machine.
Cornish Bakery managing director, Mat Finch said, “We are delighted to be opening in Exeter, a fantastic city full of energy and vibrancy. This new location represents an exciting opportunity for us to invest in the high street, restoring this unit for contemporary use as a high-end bakery.
"Our team has worked hard to create something truly special here, a bespoke experience that combines exceptional food and coffee against the backdrop of an elevated design. We believe Exeter is a fantastic fit for Cornish Bakery and we look forward to becoming part of its thriving city centre.”
A perfect breakfast, lunch or afternoon stop off for shoppers, visitors and residents alike, the Exeter Bakery Manager and team will be ready to welcome customers from 8am - 6pm every day of the week from Monday November 17th 2025.
