The Most Common December Pests and How to Stop Them?

When temperatures drop and winter sets in, many pests begin searching for warm places to hide. Unfortunately, that often means moving into homes, garages and workplaces. December might feel too cold for insects and rodents to be active, but it’s one of the busiest times of the year for pest control callouts. Understanding which pests are most common at this time of year, and knowing how to deal with them, can help protect your home and stop infestations before they become serious. This guide explains the top December pests, why they appear, and the steps you can take to prevent them....

Wild weather leads to the Year of the Slug & Orchid

According to National Trust wildlife experts, unsettled, unpredictable and at times chaotic weather has meant that last year was a particularly challenging one for wildlife.

Whilst birds and insects have struggled, slugs and orchids have done well throughout Britain in our special places.

Matthew Oates, Naturalist at the Trust, said: "This has been a highly polarised year, with wildlife in the places we look after doing either remarkably well or incredibly badly.

"In general, plants and slugs were the big winners and insects the big losers. But even in this wet...

Keeping up with the (Continental) neighbours

Germans are the most capable, the Turkish are the least confident and the French are the champions at spending… on DIY. What about the UK and Ireland? We are the keenest gardeners.

Our Continental neighbours are discovering the joys of "do it yourself" and, at home or in the garden, are going at it hammer and nail, thus feeding changes across the Eurozone in home improvement, according to a recent European Home Report by Kingfisher, owner of B&Q, the UK’s largest home improvement retailer.

Modern Europeans are, at last, following in the footsteps of the UK, where...

Wreaths come in many different styles and colours, but what exactly do they represent? The Exeter Daily finds out...

In ancient Rome, people used decorative wreaths as a sign of victory. Some believe that this is where the hanging of wreaths on doors came from.

The origins of the Advent wreath are found in the folk practices of the pre-Christian Germanic peoples who, during the cold December darkness of Eastern Europe, gathered wreaths of evergreen and lighted fires as signs of hope in a coming spring and renewed light.

Indigenous to Mexico and Central America, this plant is now a Christmas staple for many UK homeowners. Over 100 million Poinsettias are sold every year throughout Europe, but what many people are not aware of is exactly how the plant gets its famous crimson colour.

The secret... shading the plants in darkness for 50 days. Growers begin in May, six months before they go on sale, to grow the plants and to...

How to resurrect your garden after the floods

With all the floods the South West is experiencing at the moment, The Exeter Daily turned to The Royal Horticultural Society for a bit of advice on how to resurrect your garden once the flooding has subsided.

Few garden plants will survive waterlogging or flooding. Prolonged periods of sitting in ground saturated with water causes yellow leaves, root rot and death. However, conditions can be improved using various techniques to promote drainage and prevent damage.

Soils become waterlogged when water builds up, unable to drain away. This leaves no air...

As with many successful businesses, Ashgrove Kitchens really grew as a result of personal recommendation. In 1987 Andy Davis had set up a small business in Crediton to supply kitchen units to other trades, such as kitchen designers and fitters. But local people got to hear about it and word of mouth led him to start producing designer kitchens for retail customers.

The kitchens units are individually made at their factory in Crediton by skilled craftsmen, many of whom have been with the business since the beginning. As the company grew they expanded into making other interior fittings...
