What Separates a Decent Garden From One You Actually Use

Most gardens look fine. They have a lawn, some borders, maybe a patio. Nothing wrong with them.

The problem is how little time people spend on them.

If you walk past most back gardens on a Saturday afternoon in May, the furniture sits empty. The barbecue has not been lit since last August. The kids are inside. The lawn has been cut recently, which is about the only evidence anyone has been out there.

Then there are the gardens that get used constantly. From March to October, sometimes beyond. People eat out there, read out there, have friends round, and the...

Visitors to recycling centres will be asked for £3.50 for each of these items, £3.50 for a bag or roll of insulation material or roofing felt. Guttering pipes will be charged at £3.50 for...

Gardeners should start preparing early for their great slug and snail hunt this year as winter temperatures have provided the perfect conditions for their arch enemies.

According to Wyevale Garden Centres – the UK’s largest garden centre group - last year, gardeners spent £11.6 million in their battle to protect their botanical spaces, battling over 30 species of slugs including a voracious invader discovered on our shores only last year – the Spanish slug (Arion vulgaris).

Slugs like mild and warm winters and Met Office statistics show that average temperatures were...

The widening gap between house prices and wages means that first time buyers living in the South West of England are having to pay almost £63,000 more for a home, new research from Shelter reveals today.

The charity’s analysis shows that if the average income of a first time buyer and average house prices had remained in line in the region, those lucky enough to get a foot on the property ladder would be paying almost £63,000 – or 37% – less for their first home.

With average house prices in the South West now ten times the average wage, compared to just six times fifteen...

How safe is your shed?

Most people use their shed to store garden equipment, bicycles and even expensive power tools. Yet, often, sheds are fitted with inadequate locks, or no lock at all.

Since June last year, over seventy-one victims in South Devon had their sheds broken into and property stolen. Almost half of these occurred in Teignbridge.

Fourteen sheds were broken into in Torquay and twelve across Ivybride and Kingsbridge. The areas reporting the fewest number of break-ins were Totnes, Dartmouth, Paignton and Brixham.

To reduce this type of crime, Police have teamed with South Devon...
