Does the January lockdown currently have you sat scrolling through Instagram and Pinterest looking at inspiration for home makeovers? Have the January blues helped you decide that now is the time to plan your great interior revamp? With many of us now back to staying in our homes almost 24 hours a day, 2021 is the year to make your home a place you love again.

Use the time you have at home to generate ideas on what you would like to do to improve it. From a simple colour change to a full remodelling of the current theme. These steps will help you on the way to an interior that you will love.

The Mood Board

Lockdown 3.0 has meant we are back to scrolling through social media at unhealthy levels. Instead of doom scrolling, use apps such as Pinterest to design a mood board, pinning interior ideas you like the look of, anything from, colour schemes to styles and storage ideas. Looking at what others have achieved will spur you on. Once you have had enough of the digital world, grab a large piece of paper or sketch book and a range of home interior magazines. Look through the magazines, cutting out photos that you like the look of; it can be anything from accessories and colour samples, to full rooms. Stick these to your paper, writing notes alongside. You can add fabric and paint samples to your mood board too, really getting an idea of your style.

 A New Room Layout

If it’s a new room layout you are after there are several things to try. Take as much furniture out of the room as possible (including clutter) and try positioning items in new places to see how they look and feel, moving the sofa or chair to an opposite wall for example. If it’s new furniture you are thinking of investing in but are unsure of the size, try cutting out paper to the dimensions of the product, placing it in different areas of the room to gage it’s impact. Kitchens are harder to envisage, however, many companies have online design tools to help you visualise a new creation, why not try your hand at a digital design before heading into a local showroom to finalise the details.

Less Is More

You may have heard the term ‘less is more’ before, but have you practised it? More often than not we come to dislike a room or area in the house because it has become overcrowded with material possessions. It’s all too easy to unknowingly collect objects but when it comes to an interior design revamp, the clutter needs to go. Start by clearing out items you no longer use, charity shops and online marketplaces are good ways to sustainably donate unwanted possessions. Once the clutter is removed, you will be able to see the room more clearly. With a fresh canvas, your interior design ideas will come flooding in, and it won’t be long until you have the home you dreamt of.
