Whether you have just moved into a new home or you simply want to inject more of your personality into your current one, it can be tricky to know where to start when it comes to adding personal touches to your house. Of course, there is always the tried and tested method of hanging up as many family photographs as humanly possible on every available wall; but, surely, there are more exciting and creative ways to personalise your home?

Thankfully, there are, and what’s better is that they don’t have to cost a lot of money, meaning you can transform your home without having to take out a second mortgage to pay for it. Keep reading to discover seven creative ways to help you start creating a more unique and personalised home today.

1. Think About What Inspires You

Before you rush out and buy a load of knick-knacks to put in each room, you first need to sit down and have a think about what really inspires you. What are you passionate about? This could be a hobby, a band, a specific film genre, or even just a style that you favour, such as shabby-chic or eclectic. It is important to identify what you love if you want your home to truly reflect your individual tastes and if you want it to be able to bring you joy on a daily basis.

2. Create A Vision Board

Although not everyone’s cup of tea, a vision board can be extremely helpful in ensuring that you remain on the right path to creating your vision. It can be all too easy to become carried away at the local DIY store, buying accessories that you don’t want or need, simply because they look good in the showroom. Having a clear and tangible idea of what you want is vital if you want the end result to match the vision that you have in your head. A vision board can also be a useful tool for adding additional ideas that you may think of along the way, like a treasured photograph or a postcard from your travels that you found hiding in the back of the kitchen drawer. However small and insignificant an idea, if it inspires you and puts a smile on your face, then add it to the board.

3. Start with Items That Have Meaning

The simplest way to personalise your home is by displaying items that have sentimental value in the areas of your home where you spend most of your time. This could be something your child made you at school, a memento from your wedding day, or maybe an item you collected while travelling; whatever you choose, as long as it holds a strong emotional connection to you and your family, it will work perfectly. Books are also a great way to customise your home, especially if you are an avid reader and pride yourself on your extensive collection. What could be more personal than seeing your treasured books on display for all to see? And don’t worry if you don’t have a bookcase, as you can instead evoke a more contemporary vibe by creating a single stack of books in the corner of your living room.

4. Use Your Life’s Motto

Most people have a saying or two that they quote to their family and friends. Often. You know the types of sayings; “This home runs on love” and “Live, Laugh, Love.” Or for the jokers among you; “May your aim be with you.” Investing in a few personal wall stickers is arguably the easiest way to let your personality shine through, whether you are an old romantic, a soppy sentimental, or a bit of a cheeky chappie. You can even add personalised wall art to your children’s room with stickers detailing their name, or their preferred superhero name if you have an Avengers-loving child.

5. Create A Feature Wall

Rather than just hanging family photographs and other pieces of personal art randomly around your home, which can look haphazard, why not create one impressive feature wall that proudly displays all your personalised pictures?  This could be on a spare wall in the living room, in your kitchen, or even on the walls in your stairway; it doesn’t matter what space you choose, as long as you are creative with the execution. Also, make sure that you choose photo frames of different shapes, sizes and designs, so that your wall does not appear too regimented and unoriginal. It can be a good idea to mix and match the type of pieces you hang, whether that be family portraits, your children’s artwork, or a painting by an artist that you love.

6. Showcase Your Talents

Whether you are a keen crafter, love to crochet, or even if you love to play a musical instrument, make sure that you display your interests for all to see. Casually draping a blanket that you made over your sofa or having your music stand and preferred instrument take pride of place in your living room can work wonders for showcasing your talents and showing your guests what you are really about.

7. Opt for Original Furniture

Of course, your entire home doesn’t need to be decked out in rare antique pieces; that would cost you a small fortune, not to mention it would entail a lot of time and effort. However, taking the time to seek out original furniture at cheaper places such as car boot sales or antique fairs can help ensure that your home stands out from the crowd. The important rule to remember is that one cool, original piece can uplift a whole room and make the rest of your generic furniture seem more appealing. Try it for yourself; it really does work.

How ever you choose to personalise your home, it will work, and you know why? Because you chose the items. You put the love and care into the design. It is your vision, your inspiration, your home.
