Another major lift is planned to take place at the South Devon Link Road site this weekend, as the next set of bridge beams are lifted into place.

On Thursday night (21 August) a large crane will begin to lift a series of steel bridge beams, measuring up to 30 metres long, into position at Hamelin Way, Torquay.  This operation will take place over three nights with a fourth night, Sunday 24 August, being available as a contingency.

The beams, each weighing up to 40 tonnes, will form part of the construction of Torbay Ring Road Underbridge, Structure 34 and will span the Torbay railway line.

Hamelin Way will be closed overnight on Thursday 21 August through to Saturday 23 August between 21:00 and 06:00 the following day. This is to allow the beams to be moved safely into place.

Traffic levels are low at these times and the works are being carried out overnight to cause to minimise disruption. Vehicles will be diverted along Riviera Way and Shiphay Lane.

Torbay Council is also taking advantage of the road closure to carry out litter picking, gully cleaning and grass cutting on the remainder of Hamelin Way.

The first pair of beams will arrive early morning on Thursday 21 August when they will be taken along the existing A380 and onto the construction site, via Hamelin Way. The delivery of the remaining beams will take place early morning on Friday and Saturday.

The huge 500 tonne crane is the second on site in the last few weeks, following the lifting of three beams into place at Maddacombe Road last month.
