Biloxi Lighthouse, Biloxi

People of Biloxi love this lighthouse like no other building in the country. It is not only an extremely observable landmark, but also a sign of Biloxi’s strength and flexibility. When Katrina’s outrageous storm flood hit over one-third of the lighthouse’s 64 feet high body, it nonetheless stood soaring, tough, proud and strong. It was one of the first iron made lighthouses in the South. One more famous old highlight goes to Maria Youngman’s, who inclined the light for 53 years, becoming as much of a milestone as the lighthouse itself. Visitors will mostly climb the lighthouse for its supreme sight over the Biloxi Bay and Gulf Coast.

Cathedral of the Nativity

The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Holy Virgin Mary, at 870 West Howard Street in Biloxi, Mississippi, is the chair of the Roman Catholic Bishopric of Biloxi. It was planned by Theodore Brune and constructed by J.F. Barnes & Company of Greenville, Mississippi in 1902. The cathedral was considered to the National Register of important location in 1984.

Brune was a German-American engineer who designed numerous churches on the Gulf Coast of Louisiana. The Gothic building design for the Blessed Virgin Mother Catholic Church on West Howard Avenue was built after the original church was damaged by the Great Biloxi Fire of November 1900 on the same site. Damaged glass windows were given to the church by Julia Dulion Lopez (1857-1918) in memory of her late husband in early 1906. The windows were made by Reis and Reis of Munich, Germany and installed by Frederick Thornley of New York.
