Europe boasts a plethora of famous landmarks, from the Berlin Wall, the Colosseum, Big Ben, and the Eiffel Tower, to the sandy beaches of the Spanish Costas. But the continent has so much more to offer than the tried and tested favourites. Why not get ahead of the crowds by visiting some of Europe’s beautiful hidden gems? There’s nothing like discovering a new destination, or jetting off to beautiful locations your friends and family have never even heard of before.

1) Gorges du Verdon, France
The glittering turquoise waters of France’s Gorges du Verdon look as if they belong in an otherworldly tropical destination like Vietnam or Jamaica, and yet here they are in Europe!
Verdon Gorge is a river canyon in southeastern France, boasting impressive jagged cliffs and thrilling white-water rapids. You can go kayaking or paddle boarding on the incredible waters here, or alternatively hike one of the many trails into the stunning scenery around the canyon.
The village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie also sits within the Verdon Natural Regional Park and is a must-visit when in the area. Meander its streets to discover the stunning 12th-century Notre Dame de Beauvoir Chapel, and local ceramics at the Musee de la Faience.
2) Kotor, Montenegro
Kotor comprises a breathtaking polished, marble old town alongside the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro. Wandering the streets of the town feels like being in a real life fairytale thanks to it’s incredible architecture and the many beautiful churches along the way. Kotor feels like a smaller, quieter - but no less charming - alternative to Dubrovnik’s busy old town.
Climb the city walls to a fort that sits high in the surrounding mountains, or sail to one of the many islands off the coast to discover ancient churches and secluded beaches. Keen hikers can enjoy a trip to the spectacular Lovcen National Park too.
3) Saranda, Albania
On the Albanian Riviera lies the gorgeous resort of Saranda (sometimes called Sarandë). This beautiful town sits in a horseshoe bay on the Ionian Sea, surrounded by rolling hills dotted with olive groves. The perfect destination for beach lovers, this coastal resort also boasts a number of areas of historical interest. In the centre you’ll discover the archaeological remains of a 5th-century synagogue, while Lekuresi Castle - built in the 16th century - sits on a hilltop looking over the town.
4) Bled, Slovenia
Slovenia has fast been rising in popularity as a tourist destination, as travellers wake up to the spellbinding capital of Ljubljana and the beautiful countryside that blankets the country. Bled - a town nestled in the foothills of the Julian Alps - contains the country’s most iconic sight: the medieval Bled Castle, balancing on a striking island that rises out of the crystalline waters of Lake Bled. As well as enjoying the lake and exploring the 11th-century castle, visitors will also find many beautiful hikes to enjoy in the surrounding scenery. Visit in autumn for particularly spectacular views, when the trees blanketing the hillsides turn gold and red.
5) Segovia, Spain
There are so many incredible destinations in Spain, from Madrid to Barcelona to the coastal beaches, that it can be difficult to know where to start. Segovia is a serious contender if you’re looking for a different experience in the country. This UNESCO World Heritage City with myriad historical monuments that make it perfect for history buffs looking for a sunshine holiday. Visit the 12th-century castle Alcazar de Segovia, or the impossibly ornate Royal Palace. There’s also the towering Roman Aqueduct, which provides an incredible backdrop for some holiday snaps, and the city’s ornate gothic cathedral.
