As a third of Brits plan to spend their holiday in the UK this year[i], new research reveals the most popular places for a child friendly staycation with Exeter taking the tenth spot.
Whilst London comes in at number one, Scottish cities Glasgow and Edinburgh were second and third most popular – proving the combination of entertainment, culture and historical architecture wins tourists’ hearts.
Premier Inn conducted the study based on data showing summer 2019 bookings made by families with children.
Whether families choose a seaside escape, cultural city tour or historical town visit, the millions of staycations taken in 2019 are expected to boost the UK’s tourism economy.
Outside of the top three, the research found Manchester was the most popular English city break that wasn’t the capital, and Dover with its picturesque white cliffs and access to mainland Europe ranked as the highest coastal destination.
Popular Northern cities Liverpool and Newcastle also continue to win the hearts of tourists with families the study proved – and the expected ‘Whey Eye’, Europe’s largest observation wheel should continue that.
UK’s Most Popular Staycation Locations
A Premier Inn spokesperson said: “While the school holidays might mean a trip abroad for many, using the school break to explore more of the UK is a great idea. Just a glance at our list of the ten most popular family staycation destinations for 2019 tells you how varied the UK is.
“There’s no surprise London tops the list with its rich history, landmarks and huge number of things to do, but it’s great to see regional destinations like Exeter in the list too. We hope our findings will provide inspiration for any families unsure of where to go this year”.
