Holidays are a time to kick back, relax and enjoy a break with your loved ones. Traditionally, UK tourists have been shunning their own country for overseas holidays, but all that has changed in recent years. Three out of five Brits have revealed that they’ll be holidaying in the UK this year, while, Devon and neighbouring county Cornwall take the top spot for destination of choice. With multiple attractions available in Devon and it being easy and convenient to access no matter where in the UK you’re based, it’s easy to see why staycations in Exeter come out on top.

The convenience of staying home

Research has found that a third of British holidaymakers get homesick while on holiday, therefore, more and more are turning to staycations as they are convenient and give you the opportunity to enjoy a break without missing any of your home comforts. While sunny holidays in Spain and Portugal are nice enough, they don't come with British television, your pet dog or your favourite English foods. Holidays overseas often prove difficult for families with young children too as having to pack multiple packs of nappies, baby formula and wipes is difficult, but by heading to Exeter you can be sure that there's a supermarket nearby which will cater for all your little one's needs, so there's no need to cram it all into your suitcase.

Stress free

A report conducted for Go Outdoors in 2017 revealed that four in five of the population would choose a staycation over a holiday abroad due to it being less stressful. A holiday is a time to enjoy yourself and it starts with the journey to your destination, so the last thing you want is to be worrying about how you’re going to entertain the kids on a long haul flight. Thankfully, travelling to your holiday destination has never been easier as Exeter airport is conveniently located and has proudly gained a five star efficiency rating for passenger check in in a Which online survey. And with regular flights from some of the country’s biggest cities, including London, Manchester and Glasgow, reaching Exeter has never been simpler.

Whatever the weather

British summers are getting warmer and sunnier and, according to the Met Office, the south west sees a total of 1600 hours of sunshine each year. One study conducted by the University of Swansea found that the country’s summers are currently the hottest they’ve been since the Roman times. When you head abroad, you expect to be met by beautiful sunny skies and scorching sun, but when the rain makes an unexpected appearance it can put a real damper on your getaway, and how do you entertain the kids when it’s pouring it down? But when you’re at home, you make the most of the weather and instead of dwelling on it, you can enjoy a day at one of Exeter’s many cinemas or head to Riverside Leisure Centre for a splash around in the indoor pool.

As more and more of the nation choose to take a staycation in Devon, ensure you choose Exeter as your city of choice. Holidaying at home comes with the benefit of being more convenient, less stressful and when the sun is refusing to shine, there’s always something to keep the family entertained.
