Devon’s NHS 111 service to launch in September

Devon’s two clinical commissioning groups (CCG) have taken the decision to delay the launch of the NHS 111 service so they can learn from other areas where the service already operates to make sure people in Devon get the best possible service.

NHS Direct will continue to provide a service in Devon until NHS 111 goes live.

Improvements to diagnosis of dementia in Devon shortlisted for national award

Devon’s NHS has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award thanks to improvements it has made to dementia care in the county.

The local NHS, which includes Devon, Plymouth and Torbay, will find out if it has won a Care Integration Award at a ceremony in London on Tuesday 9 July 2013.

The nomination is for the development of a dementia care pathway that has already reduced the waiting times for specialist dementia diagnosis and memory assessment, and has improved awareness of the benefits of diagnosis at an early stage by the patients’ GP.

Devon GP welcomes Prime Minister’s dementia challenge

A GP from Budleigh Salterton has welcomed a challenge from the Prime Minister to the NHS for 20 per cent more people who have dementia to be diagnosed by 2015.

Schools across Devon are becoming interactive theatres during a series of Healthy Lifestyle Weeks designed to formulate a programme which could ultimately be rolled out across all schools.

International Clinical Trials Day at the RD&E

The RD&E is celebrating International Clinical Trials Day on Monday (May 20).

The day marks the first recognised research project which was conducted by James Lind into cures for Scurvy in the 18th century. Research is now a core part of the NHS with funding provided to support better prevention, diagnosis and treatment of health related conditions.

Karen MacMillan, who leads the Reception Team at the Nuffield Health Exeter Hospital, walked through the night on Saturday to raise over £1,100 for breast cancer awareness charities.

APPCOG welcomes optional Carbon Monoxide test for pregnant women

In an attempt to protect unborn babies from the effects of smoking, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has suggested that pregnant women be tested for carbon monoxide (CO) during antenatal appointments, via an immediate and non-invasive biochemical method, and referred to "smoking cessation services" if needed. The All Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group, (APPCOG), welcome NICE's proposals for pregnant women to be offered the carbon monoxide test. Service invents new way to keep people safe

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service has partnered with award-winning home care provider Home Instead Senior Care to keep its clients safer in their homes using a new invention.

The Service has designed a smoke alarm testing stick that will help people check their alarms without having to stand on a stool or step ladder.

Now Caregivers working for Home Instead in Exeter and East Devon are carrying the ‘pip sticks’ on their rounds and use them to test the smoke alarms at clients’ homes when they visit.
