Eighteen-year-old entrepreneur, Hannah White, has opened her first beauty salon based on Marsh Barton Trading Estate in Exeter.

Hannah, who grew up in Alphington and attended local schools Bowhill Primary School and St James High School, trained as a beautician at Exeter College and went on to work at several Exeter based salons before making the brave decision to follow her dreams and go it alone.

As temperatures start to fall PHE is urging people to think now how the onset of cooler weather could impact their health. Every year more than 25,000 extra people die in England over the winter period and many of these deaths are, experts say, preventable.

More than six months after the National Review of Asthma Deaths highlighted the complacency about asthma care, research from Asthma UK published today shows that almost 8 out of 10 people in the South West are still not receiving care that meets the most basic clinical standards (79%).1 This is despite the fact that good basic asthma care prevents life-threatening asthma attacks and needless hospital admissions.

Wellbeing drop-in sessions at Moretonhampstead Hospital

People who live in or near Moretonhampstead are being invited to the first of a series of wellbeing drop-in sessions at the town’s hospital.

The sessions will give the public an opportunity to meet the local NHS community nursing and therapy team and find out how the staff support people to live healthily and independently at home.

Local people can discuss any health, wellbeing or fitness concerns they may have, relating to themselves or someone else.

People across Devon are being urged to pledge to go red for HIV Testing Week (this week) and World AIDS Day (1 December 2014)

The Eddystone Trust, the local HIV and sexual health charity, and Devon County Council which is the strategic lead for Public Health in the county have joined forces to promote better HIV awareness in Devon

There are an estimated 107,800 people in the UK living with HIV, with over 300 Devon residents (aged 15-59) accessing HIV care; although it is estimated that one in four are unaware they have the condition.

DCC wins No Smoking Day Organiser of the Year competition

Devon County Council has won the Best Community/Local Partnership campaign in the British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) No Smoking Day Organiser of the Year competition.

For No Smoking Day 2014, Devon County Council distributed leaflets that outlined free local NHS resources for stop smoking advice. Over 14,000 leaflets were distributed throughout the community, including placement in all 50 libraries across the county.

The Council also teamed up with Exeter University Student’s Guild to run a twitter campaign aimed at students.
