Carers of people with dementia wanted for online trial

Alzheimer’s Society has launched the UK’s largest research trial of support for carers of people with dementia.

Nine in 10 carers for people with dementia experience feelings of stress or anxiety several times a week – and a further 80% find it difficult to talk about the emotional impact of caring, finds an Alzheimer’s Society survey.

Alzheimer’s Society and Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust are launching Caring For Me and You – a research trial that will test tailored online cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and support specifically designed to help carers find ways of...

NHS could save £8.2m in dental treatments if children chewed sugar-free gum

The NHS could save £8.2 million a year on dental treatments – the equivalent to 364,000 dental check-ups - if all 12-year-olds across the UK chewed sugarfree gum after eating or drinking, thanks to the role it plays in helping to prevent tooth decay.

So says a study involving researchers from Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry published in the British Dental Journal today, Friday 12th February 2016.

Tooth decay is preventable but treating it is an increasing burden on the NHS and family finances. The latest Government figures show that young...

Children who are diagnosed with diabetes before the age of seven develop a more aggressive form of the disease than that seen in teenagers, new research has revealed.

A team led by the University of Exeter Medical School has found for the first time that, while children aged six or under are left with very few insulin-producing beta cells in their pancreas when diagnosed, those with onset of symptomatic type 1 diabetes as teenagers still retain large numbers of these cells. The discovery could lead to new approaches for treatment of the disease.

The team worked with the...

Care agencies are raising awareness of the Mental Capacity Act, following concerns highlighted by a House of Lords select committee that too few people are aware of it or understand it.

The concern, held too by professionals in Devon, is that the Act, which provides protection to people who are unable to make their own decisions, isn’t recognised widely enough by the public or indeed by many in the care profession.

Devon and Torbay’s Safeguarding Adults Boards are planning a week of activity commencing Monday 8 February, to tell people about the Act.

They’re...
