Experts are warning that more than a million people in the UK – 90% of whom are smokers or ex-smokers- could be living with a serious vascular condition that can lead to leg amputation or a fatal heart attack.

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is urging smokers to give up the deadly habit on No Smoking Day (9 March) and lower their risk of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) – a silent and largely unknown killer in the UK.

The Association for Independent Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians (AIO) held the first of a series of local meetings for Independent optical professionals in Bath.

Sugar tax could prevent 3.7m cases of obesity over next decade

A 20 per cent tax on sugary drinks could reduce obesity rates in the UK by five per cent by 2025 - equal to 3.7 million fewer obese people - according to a new report from Cancer Research UK and the UK Health Forum published today (Friday).

The report predicts the impact a 20 per cent sugary drinks tax could have on obesity if current trends continue. This stark number (3.7 million) is equivalent to the combined populations of Birmingham, Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, Bristol and Leicester.

Diabetes discoveries could lead to new treatments

Children who are diagnosed with diabetes before the age of seven develop a more aggressive form of the disease than that seen in teenagers, new research has revealed.

A team led by the University of Exeter Medical School has found for the first time that, while children aged six or under are left with very few insulin-producing beta cells in their pancreas when diagnosed, those with onset of symptomatic type 1 diabetes as teenagers still retain large numbers of these cells. The discovery could lead to new approaches for treatment of the disease.

Agencies raise awareness of Mental Capacity Act

Care agencies are raising awareness of the Mental Capacity Act, following concerns highlighted by a House of Lords select committee that too few people are aware of it or understand it.

The concern, held too by professionals in Devon, is that the Act, which provides protection to people who are unable to make their own decisions, isn’t recognised widely enough by the public or indeed by many in the care profession.

Quitting smoking increases levels of happiness

Nearly two thirds (62%) of ex-smokers in the South West are happier since they quit smoking with around a third saying that giving up smoking has led to major lifestyle changes, according to new research commissioned by Smokefree South West to coincide with the launch of its Be There Tomorrow campaign.

The survey also reveals that the vast majority of smokers (91 per cent) experienced reduced or the same levels of anxiety after quitting, even though 35 per cent of people thought that kicking the habit would increase their levels of anxiety.
