Listen to Your Body: The Importance of Rest and Recovery

Modern life celebrates hustling. People often attribute working late to being a success factor. But ignoring such aches and exhaustion never helps. Something always gives—mind, body, or attitude. The truth? Pushing through exhaustion rarely improves results; it often leads to burnout. Although health experts may use scientific terminology, the body knows when it has reached its limit. It's akin to disregarding the blinking fuel light when driving. Do you feel a persistent stiffness after a long day? It's more than a nuisance—it's a warning.

'But you don’t look depressed…’

Blurt know what it’s like to live with the stigma of depression. All too often, shame and fear force us to ‘mask’ our illness; and although public attitudes are improving, unhelpful associations still abound.

This Depression Awareness Week (18-23 April), The Blurt Foundation will be harnessing the power of social media to reveal what depression REALLY looks like.

Instead of a traditional ‘selfie’, we’ll be asking people to share ‘mhelfies’ – pictures of themselves, as someone affected by a mental health issue – with a caption...

The level of commitment needed for anyone wanting to join is very light...

A senior doctor has revealed how a campaign to improve the care of people with Parkinson’s at one of the UK’s largest hospitals has succeeded in delivering better treatment for patients.

Dr Sarah Jackson, a movement disorders consultant at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital, initiated a campaign for change after an audit demonstrated the hospital could further improve care of its Parkinson’s patients.

In just five years the changes have delivered a specialist ward – one of the few in the UK, with trained Parkinson’s nurses which together with a multi-disciplinary...

Blood pressure differences between each arm can signal an increased risk of dying of heart disease, even in healthy people, a new large-scale study has found.

The University of Exeter Medical School has led an analysis of more than 3,000 people in Scotland who each had blood pressure measurements taken from both arms, published today in the British Journal of General Practice. Researchers say the findings show the importance of routinely measuring blood pressure in both arms.

Up to now, such research has mainly focussed on people who have already encountered heart disease...

Stuart Priscott is prepared to travel 200 miles to attend clinic appointments for a Cystic Fibrosis research study at a South West hospital.

The father of two, who was diagnosed with CF when he was a child, says: “I don’t view the time spent at the hospital for the research trial as time lost but very much as an investment in gaining more time if my quality of life is maintained for as long as possible. I have felt so much better since being on this trial and feel privileged to have had the opportunity to participate in it.”

Stuart said: “The impact so far of the study...

You're in safe hands at The Exeter Dental Centre

Following on from their large expansion, taking over a prime retail position in Exeter City Centre, The Exeter Dental Centre has just become officially accredited as safe and qualified to carry out non-surgical cosmetic treatments like dermal fillers.

The dental practice has already built a reputation for excellence and felt it was important to join a scheme that would enable patients to recognise them for this. Save Face, which launched in 2014, was the first organisation in the UK to provide a database of accredited practitioners – all of which have been visited and assessed for...

Survey reveals Exeter people depriving themselves of a good nights sleep

On average we spend around 24 years of our lives asleep. With that amount of time spent tucked up in bed you could be forgiven for thinking that choosing a mattress to sleep on could be a tedious and careful selection process.

Though a recent survey has revealed that the people of Exeter would rather put more time into considering what clothes they want to wear from the high street or where to top up their tans on their summer holiday.

Online mattress company Leesa conducted an independent study, which found that 36% of people think picking a destination of where to sleep...

Two fifths of people in SW confess they get out of breath running for a bus

Over two fifths of people in the South West have confessed to being so unfit they would get out of breath running for the bus, according to new statistics released as part of the British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) brand new fundraising challenge MyMarathon.
