A new research-backed risk assessment tool will support GPs in identifying the symptoms of bowel cancer and inflammatory bowel disease in patients aged under 50.

The research and the assessment tool is led by the University of Exeter, in partnership with Bowel Cancer UK Never Too Young campaign, Durham University and University Hospital of North Tees.

The Macmillan mobile information bus – affectionately known as Bertie – has been parked up in town centres, rural communities, and events across the South West throughout the year. Illegal skin lighteners, containing potentially harmful products, have been found on sale in our region.

Devon and Somerset Trading Standards Service say that the creams are similar to products which have been on sale in London. Trading Standards officers have seized a considerable quantity of illegal skin lightening creams that were being sold over the internet by a Devon-based trader.

The creams, which were being imported from the Philippines without any safety checks being carried out, contain hydroquinone, a bleaching agent.

Patients in East Devon can now benefit from better access to diagnostic facilities for prostate cancer at Exmouth Community Hospital thanks to a fundraising mission of one man.

Sixty-five year old Geoff Fidler, from Exeter, has raised almost £47,000 for the Urology Team from the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust to part-fund the purchase of an ultrasound scanner used to diagnose prostate cancer.
