Essential eye clinic changes lives for people in crisis

First-class eyecare was delivered at a free clinic for Exeter people experiencing homelessness.

Leading professionals from the Specsavers Exeter store volunteered their time and expertise in partnership with Vision Care, a charity set up to provide eyecare services to people at risk of or experiencing homelessness.

Seven opticians from the locally owned and run store based themselves at the CoLab Exeter on King William Street to offer free eye tests, glasses and support.

Celebrating Memories Baton Walk for World Alzheimer’s Month 2024

Exeter Dementia Action Alliance has marked World Alzheimer’s Month by holding a second Baton Memory Walk, visiting people living with dementia in care homes in the city.

The walk on Sunday 8th September coincided with the second anniversary of the death of the late Queen Elizabeth II. The two-hour walk concluded on Cathedral Green with a minute’s silence to remember both the Queen, and all those who live and lived with dementia.

Play the Lottery and help good causes deliver valuable services 

A charitable organisation that supports people living with multiple sclerosis and other long-term health conditions has urged more people to play the Exeter Community Lottery and help support the 120-plus good causes that are currently benefitting from ticket sales.

The South West MS Centre, which is based in Clyst Heath, Exeter, said the Community Lottery helped them raise money to deliver valuable services to people in need.

Major store refit brings enhanced experience for Exeter people

ONE of Exeter’s leading stores will be undergoing a £150,000 refit to enhance customers’ experience.

The Specsavers store’s significant makeover will include a digital front window display screen, improved lighting using energy-saving LEDs, new up-to-date displays to illuminate the glasses frames, and upgraded desks and chairs, as well as new signage and fascia to come outside.

The ambitious undertaking will be on 9-10 September, with the High Street store being closed. No appointments have been scheduled for these two days.

Free life-saving first aid training from St John Ambulance in Exeter

St John Ambulance volunteers will be offering free life-saving first aid training during September in many locations around England as its popular Save a Life September campaign returns.

People in Exeter and the surrounding area can attend free training at the following locations during the campaign:

  • 7 September – from 1.30pm – Exeter Library, Castle Street, Exeter EX4 3PQ
  • 19 September – 11am-1pm – Wolford Community and Learning Centre, Burnthouse Lane, Exeter EX2 6NF.

It's World Alzheimer’s Month - Have you Heard of Young Onset Dementia?

When most hear the word dementia it’s often Alzheimer’s disease and older people they think about. In fact there are over 100 types of dementia.

However for this piece I want to raise awareness and touch upon one of the more rare types - Young Onset Dementia (YOD) which means the person diagnosed is under 65.

This presents many challenges such as the person may have a young family, be working and also struggle to get a definitive diagnosis.
