Alzheimer’s Society’s Exeter Singing for the Brain group recently celebrated its 5th birthday.

The group celebrated this milestone with a birthday cake and a joyful rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ led by singing leader Jacky Forbes.

The group, for people with dementia and carers, meets regularly on the first and third Thursday afternoon of every month at St James’ Church Hall in Exeter.

Singing is not only an enjoyable activity, it can also provide a way for people with dementia, along with their carers, to express themselves and socialise with others.

Claire Tatton, Alzheimer’s Society Services Manager for Devon said: “Hidden in the fun of a Singing for the Brain session are activities which build on the well-known preserved memory for song and music in the brain. Even when many memories are hard to retrieve, music is especially easy to recall.

“Anyone affected by dementia is welcome whether you already sing or not. People from all walks of life, and at different stages of dementia, enjoy Singing for the Brain and many come back for more. So why not come and join us?”

The group is free of charge and runs on the first and third Thursday of every month from 2-4pm at: St James’ Church Hall, Mount Pleasant Road, Exeter.
