MEAT59, Torquay has been named as a finalist in Britain’s Best Burger competition, sponsored by Hellmann’s.

Thanks to its perfectly charred patties and great range of homemade accompaniments, MEAT59 is one of six finalists who represent the best burgers on offer in Britain. Each finalist is now in the running to be named the winner of Britain’s Best Burger, announced later this month.

The five other finalists, whose burgers came out on top in their region having been assessed on strict criteria including originality, quality of ingredients and customer feedback, are:

-       Burger Brothers, Brighton
-       Jam Jar, Newcastle
-       Burgers and Beers, Edinburgh
-       The Grazing Shed, Cardiff
-       Annie’s Burger Shack, Nottingham

The finalists, who each receive £2,500 worth of PR support, will now compete to take the Grand Prize; £10,000 worth of PR support to let the world know they serve Britain’s Best Burger.

Jenna Heasman, co-owner at MEAT59, Torquay said: "We're over the moon to have been named as having the best burger in the South West, especially considering the great quality of restaurants the region has to offer. We created MEAT59 on a shoestring, having no prior restaurant experience, so it's nice to have our huge passion for what we do acknowledged in this way. We couldn't have done it without our staff who all work incredibly hard to maintain the high standard set by co-owner Vince and myself. We look forward to carrying the title and continuing to offer the best dining experience we possibly can."

Gavin Lucas, the popular burger blogger known as ‘Burgerac’, and owner of Burgerac’s Burgershack, led a panel of judges to decide the six finalists. Gavin said: “We’ve had our work cut out as judges with hundreds of burgers to check out from high quality establishments across the country. It’s great to see operators doing the basics well and using the infinitely customisable nature of burgers to inject some real personality into their menu.”

Rhodri Morgan, marketing manager at Unilever Food Solutions, comments: “A huge congratulations to MEAT59 on having the best burger the South West has to offer. MEAT59’s burgers impressed our judges on everything from produce to presentation. Our judges definitely have their work cut out to decide which of our finalists make the ultimate burger and deserve to win Britain’s Best Burger.”

The winner will be announced on 30 August 2016.
