15 years of music in aid of National Trust

For many pupils, parents and National Trust supporters, the beginning of the Festive Season is heralded by the Exeter School Concert in aid of the National Trust in Exeter Cathedral.

For the fifteenth year running, the concert showcases the school's senior orchestral groups, brass and choirs in the magnificent Cathedral setting.

This year, highlights within the programme promise to be performances of Sibelius' impressive 'Finlandia' by the Symphony Orchestra, whilst the more intimate Chamber Orchestra will play excerpts from Warlock's 'Capriol Suite'.

Blacksmiths to compete at Finch Foundry

Blacksmiths from all over the country will be at Finch Foundry on Saturday 21 November to practice their art and celebrate their patron saint Saint Clement in the traditional manner. This includes the spectacular ‘firing of the anvil’.

The day is a rare opportunity to gain an insight into this highly skilled craft and to see some of the country’s top craftsmen in competition. They will be producing test pieces that are judged at the end of the day.

‘Bingo!’ – a phrase usually exclaimed with excitement and passion – no one questions the meaning. It would however seem, that according to recent research, students in Exeter are not so excited by the game itself – in stark contrast other locations.

A study funded by Rocket Bingo , an online bingo site shows that alongside Cambridge, students from Exeter are amongst the least likely in the country to visit a bingo hall whilst studying. World premiere for Exeter Symphony Orchestra

ESO will be the first orchestra to perform 'Voices of Remembrance' by Laura Rossi at a concert in Exeter on the 7th November.

A former member of ESO, Laura Rossi is a critically acclaimed composer who has written extensively for film and television. Voices of Remembrance invokes the thoughts and fears of the soldiers who fought in the First World War, by the skilful combination of orchestra, choir and poetry. New Reading Group Launched in Exeter

FACT is a new Exeter-based reading group that has been founded by Dave Wilson. The acronym stands for 'For Analysis, Clarity and Truth' as the group focuses on dissecting and discussing nonfiction texts together.

FACT meets monthly to discuss contemporary literature on various topics including: politics, social theory, climate change, economics, and other nonfiction. The purpose of this group is to promote fact-based information relating to current affairs in an informal setting, to understand it together and to enjoy it. Author and illustrator have designs on festive market

CHILDREN’S author Amy Sparkes and illustrator Susie Tyler are coming to a festive market with a difference this year.

And they plan to use their skills to show children and adults how to illustrate, colour and write their own stories.

Events venue Colliton Barton, which is on the main road between Cullompton and Honiton, is playing host to the market on Sunday, November 15, and as well featuring high quality craft items for sale the organisers are inviting visitors to take part in workshops throughout the day.
