Poker is one of the most famous casino games of all time, and arguably, the most daunting. Whether you opt to play online casino games, or hold the cards close to your chest at a land-based establishment, Poker is actually a fairly simple game to get the hang of.

Ace in the hole
This means one of your hole cards is an Ace.
Aces full
This term describes a full house made up of three Aces and any other pair.
Backdoor
When a hand is made thanks to the turn and river cards, it’s called a backdoor hand. You can either get a flush, straight or a full house.
Blank
If you fail to hit the card(s) you’re hoping for then you’ll be drawing a blank.
Blocker
This is the term given to a card that either totally or partially blocks another player from making a hand.
Bluff
By raising or matching bets and playing as though you have a good hand when you don’t, you’ll be bluffing in the hopes of getting other players to fold.
Community cards
The community cards are the five face-up cards dealt to everyone, displayed in the middle of the table.
Dark bet
If you announce that you’re going to bet before you’ve seen all of the cards that are due to be dealt, you will be making what’s called a dark bet.
Dead money
This is the name given to any money in the pot that has been contributed by those who are no longer in play.
Double up
Going all in and winning against one other player is called doubling up, as you’ll essentially be doubling your stack.
Early position
This is the name given to a position in which you must act before most of the other players sat at the table.
Free card
A free card is given when there is no betting in a betting round, meaning nobody has to pay to see it.
Grinding
If you play conservatively for a long period of time, you’re known to be trying to grind out some money, rather than trying to make money quickly.
Heads up
This is the term used when two players are playing against each other.
Jam
A pot that’s seen many different players making raises is described as jam.
Ladies
A pair of Queens is otherwise known as ladies.
Misclick
If you accidentally perform an action when playing online, it’s called a misclick.
Nosebleed
A term used to describe exceptionally high stakes in high-roller games.
Offsuit
If your hole cards are made up of two different suits, they’re said to be offsuit.
Pot
All the money that’s been bet throughout a game is known as the pot.
Quads
Quads is another name given to a four-of-a-kind, and is often said prior to the value of the cards.
Rabbit hunt
When the hand ends and all players agree to see which cards would’ve been dealt if the round continued is called a rabbit hunt.
River
The final betting round in a game is known in some games as the river.
Shark
A really good Poker player is known as a shark.
Tell
The term given to a player that gives a hint as to the strength of their hand, often without meaning to.
Upswing
If you win more than you normally would, you’re said to be having an upswing.
Whale
Someone with very little skill is sometimes referred to as a whale.
