Whether you fancy a 1940s experience night with The Three Belles, Jazz in the afternoon in Sidmouth or family fun at the magnificent Imaginarium visiting RAMM, don't plan your weekend until you have checked out our essential guide to what's on in and around Exeter.

THEATRE

Grandpa in my Pocket: Teamwork!
Friday & Saturday, Exeter Northcott
Grandpa in my Pocket comes to the stage for a whole new ‘Grandpa’ theatre experience for young fans of the hugely popular CBeebies television series.  Performances: Friday at 2.30pm and 6pm and on Saturday at 10.30am and 2.30pm. Tickets: £16. www.exeternorthcott.co.uk

Here Come the Boys
Friday & Saturday, The Hour Glass, Melbourne Street, Exeter
A week of shows by four of Exeter theatre's brightest young males, in the only place they could think of doing it: a pub. The shows are as follows: Labels by Joe Sellman-Leava at  7pm (not on Saturday August 10); Wild by Michael Woodman at 7.30pm; Blank by Dean Elliot at 8.15pm and Rain by Jack Dean at 9pm. Haunting Julia

New Sounds Showcase

Jazz in the Afternoon

Summer Fair
Sunday, 10am, The Donkey Sanctuary, Sidmouth
There will be a wide range of activities and displays for the enjoyment of all the family. The fun begins at 10am and admission is free. A craft tent, trailer rides, Punch and Judy, a barbecue, bouncy castles, face painting, dog agility, a beer tent, and various fun inflatables are just some of the highlights. 

The Imaginarium
Saturday, 11am, RAMM, Queen Street, Exeter
Visit the Imaginarium marquee in RAMM’s garden and be prepared for the unexpected with fun and nonsense for all the family.

Summer Fete
Saturday, 2pm, The Royal Oak, Nadderwater
The Royal Oak’s annual charity summer fete is set to be a great afternoon with all the proceeds going to ExeAccess, Exeter’s local mobility charity and Hospiscare. There will be live music with Shovelhead, pig roast, bric-a-brac stalls, skittles competition, Tarot reading, face painting, a grand raffle with fantastic prizes, and lots more all between 2pm and 6pm.

Newtown History Cafe
Sunday, 2pm, Belmont Park, Newtown, Exeter
The history of Newtown will be revealed at the cafe in Belmont Park on Sunday 11 August. An exhibition, entitled Newtown through the Ages will show how the area has developed over the centuries from the Roman period to present day. Newtown certainly has a lot more history than what might be expected. The cafe is open from 2pm-4pm and is followed by a historical guided walk of the local area starting at 4.15pm at the hut in Belmont Park.

EXHIBITIONS

Elena Steer
A la Ronde, Exmouth
Local talented artist Elena Steer returns with a summer exhibition entitled The Guilded Duck, an eclectic mix of still life paintings. Normal admission applies, free entry into exhibition which runs until 14 August. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/a-la-ronde

i am algorithm: Charlie Tweed
Exeter Phoenix
i am algorithm continues Charlie Tweed’s exploration of the human desire to control and systematise the natural world, and how new technologies have instilled a complex form of social control over populations in both the physical and virtual sphere. The exhibition runs until 31 August and entry is free. www.exeterphoenix.org.uk

Wasted
RAMM, Queen Street, Exeter
This exhibition explores the life-giving potential of ‘discarded’ body parts and their relationship to myths, history, cutting edge stem cell research and notions of what constitutes informed consent. The art works are sculptural, incorporating milk teeth donated by children and bones and fat from living, consenting donors. The museum is open 10am-5pm Tuesday to Sunday and the exhibition runs until the end of September. www.rammuseum.org.uk
