Motherland a new play by Suze Gardner
We are a newly formed company Stage-Wright Productions premiering our first play Motherland at Tiverton Community Art Theatre on Saturday 22nd February and thereafter in a selection of village halls around the region of Exeter.
Motherland focuses on the life and practices of Marie Stopes, the birth control pioneer. Set towards the end of the second world war this witty and provocative black comedy portrays a fascinating study into one of the most outspoken women of the time.
The play explores the issues of women in the first half of the 20th century for whom contraception was rare, Maries work in setting up clinics addressed this. It also shows Marie as wife and mother revealing complexities in her character, which sets her against her own family.
Whilst being extremely entertaining Motherland offers a rare insight into one of the most controversial women of the 20th century.
Stage-Wright productions is a new company set up to promote new writing by local playwrights who can offer works of interest which would appeal to general theatre audiences of any age.
