Both John Hubbard and Adam Buick are known for their tendency to work with natural materials in an exciting and modern way, combining the elements of nature - mostly water and earth - to try and represent the essence of life.

John Hubbard is a serious and celebrated artist, born in the USA in 1931 and now living in Dorset. He has had a long and distinguished career exhibiting internationally with his work in public and private collections worldwide.

Hubbard uses vine charcoal in many of his drawing to express the movement and dynamics of rushing and siwlring water, rocks and twisted trees clinging on for life.

"These are paintings to be savoured by those who like consistency in art." - New York Times

Meanwhile, Adam Buick uses clay and stone to create 'Moon Jars' which use a silent artistic narritvie to represent the unique Pembrookeshire landscape where he lives.

Moon Jars originated in Korea but were orginally made from plain white porcelin; at the time they reperesented purity, honestly and modesty. Buick was also struck by these qualities, its serenity and simplicity, so much so that for the past seven years he has made nothing else, not to try and replicate but to capture the ephemeral qualities that the form resonates.

Buick is an award winning ceramicist, born in Newport, Gwent in1978. He studied at Lampeter University, West Wales School of Art and with the Crafts Council of Ireland.

“Adam Buick has imposed on himself the strict discipline of the simplest and purest of geometric forms. Don’t expect his spheres of fired clay to be standoffish or predictable though. Yes Adam makes white porcelain moon jars as chaste in their beauty as the old Korean dal-hang-a-ri vessels that first inspired him. But within the confines of his spherical ‘canvas’ he also conjures up worlds of spontaneous drama, pots so diverse in their scale and texture, so exquisite in their making, so alive with the Pembrokeshire landscape which they literally embody, that his passionate connection to his environment becomes unmistakable.” - Andrew Renton, Head of Applied Arts, National Museum, Cardiff

Hubbard and Buick will be showcasing their work in Topsham Art Room until Sunday 14 July. Topsham Art Room is open on Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday, 11am to 5pm.
