Saturday 12th March sees a new show of folk songs come to the Cygnet Theatre in Exeter, celebrating women from history.

The show is being curated by three of the team from Wren Music – Amy Wilson, Sarah Owen and Marilyn Tucker (pictured), and has already recruited a chorus of 30 women who are sure to make the evening extra special.

Although the arts organisation already runs five community choirs across the county, they spotted an opportunity to bring together a women-only singing group specifically to celebrate women’s history for international women’s day.

Marilyn, co-founder of Wren Music said, “We found that there were not very many traditional folk songs that celebrate women’s achievements, and so we are writing many new songs for the project. We have songs about midwives, the equal pay struggle and many more. Including a new song written for the choir about two important women from Lyme Regis: Elizabeth Coade who invented Coade Stone, and Mary Anning, who discovered dinosaur fossils on the coast there.”

Wren Music has been based in Okehampton for 33 years, and having a local angle is important to their work. Community Musician Sarah said, “We often work with local songs and culture, so it’s a real treat for me to be looking specifically into local women’s history. Women from Honiton and Exeter feature in two songs, and it’s been great to arrange these songs for women’s voices.”
