East Devon District Council Countryside team is aiming to improve bio-diversity in Honiton.

The play equipment currently in the Honiton Bottom Local Nature Reserve is coming to the end of its serviceable life and is due to be removed over the next few months. This change of focus provides an opportunity for East Devon District Council Countryside Team, who manage the site, to bring about improved habitat for a range of wildlife.

The removal of the play equipment will allow for expanded areas of tree planting, improved wildflower grassland management and the chance to enhance access through the site with footpath improvements and new benches.

Countryside ranger, Nathan Robinson who will be working on the site said: “These necessary changes in the management of Honiton Bottom provide the opportunity to greatly improve the Local Nature Reserve for wildlife through enhanced habitat management. Improvements to footpaths and seating making will also make the area a more enjoyable place for visitors.’’

Over the coming months, there will be increased involvement from the East Devon Conservation Volunteers who will be planting more trees to create wooded areas, continuing to support the development of the new orchard and installing new benches at Honiton Bottom.

The Countryside team manage ten nature reserves across the district. For more information on the sites managed by the countryside team, and the conservation work the team carry out, visit wildeastdevon.co.uk.
