Castle opens its doors for new season

Powderham Castle, the 600 year old home of the Earl and Countess of Devon near Exeter, opens its doors this Friday for the start of the new 2015 season. 

After months of preparation, the Castle & grounds will be open again to visitors from Friday 27th March to Friday 30th October 2015, and provides a perfect history-laden family day out. The Castle is open from Sunday to Friday from 11am to 4.30 pm.

This Saturday, Powderham Castle with be holding a Spring Open Day to celebrate the start of the 2015 season from 11am to 4.30 pm. 

Close neighbours living in Powderham, Kenton, Starcross, Mamhead, Kenn or Exminster will be given free admission. Simply bring proof of residency with you on the day.

"We’ve got some fantastic events lined up this season with some of the highlights including Toby Buckland’s Garden Festival on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd May and the Let’s Rock Exeter concert on Saturday July 4th. Behind the scenes we've all been very busy over the winter months getting ready for a fun-packed year," said Communication Manager Catherine Crowe. 

To kick-start the new season, the Powderham team are announcing the return of their ever-popular Chocolate and Candy fortnight by Jonty Depp and the Pocketwatch Theatre Company.

“We have a whole host of fun activities for all the family at Powderham Castle during the Easter holidays from Sunday 29th March to Friday 10th April”, adds Catherine. “Come and meet our famous chocolatier and his team who have an affection for perfection in confection.”

There will be a Welcome in the Castle Courtyard at 12.15 and then visitors will be allocated a 15 minute time to visit the ‘Imagination Room’ between 12.30 to 1.30 and 2.30 to 3.30. Taste, smell and identify sweet related things, understand the science of confectionary.

In addition, Powderham Castle will also be running a special Easter Trail for children to follow around the grounds to win a prize. Families can pick up their session ticket on arrival. Both the ‘Chocolate and Candy’ fortnight and Easter trail are included in a child's standard admission.

Powderham Castle and grounds, one of the oldest Castles in Devon, make an ideal place to visit for people of all ages during the Easter holiday. Families are invited to come and marvel at the spring flowers in the grounds, enjoy a guided tour of the Castle and lunch in the Courtenay Cafe.
