Find World Book Day costumes for free in Devon libraries

Libraries Unlimited is partnering with Recycle Devon to bring World Book Day costume swap rails to 15 libraries in Devon. World Book Day 2026 is Thursday, 5th March and library swap rails are running from 16th February to 8th March. Customers are invited to donate outgrown, unwanted children’s costumes in good, wearable condition. Costumes will be available to take home for free!

Free workshops for keen crafters

Keen crafters are being encouraged to go along to the Contemporary Craft Festival in Bovey Tracey next week (Friday 7 to Sunday 9 June).

Devon County Council’s Adult and Community Learning will be providing workshops for anyone who might be interested in taking up a craft and enrolling on a course. Current learners’ and tutors’ work will also be showcased at the festival.

Lapford Parents Challenge Academy over Education Changes

In March this year, Chulmleigh Academy Trust following a consultation decided that Year 6 children from Lapford School and East Worlington School children were to be Educated at Chulmleigh Primary school from September 2013.

Opposition to the proposal:

The vast majority of parents from Lapford, the wider community and the local council are opposed to this decision. Many letters of opposition have been sent and also a petition has been obtained containing 370 signatures from a village that only has 250 houses.

Devon schools in national initiative to develop dementia-friendly communities

Seven Devon schools are taking part in a pioneering initiative to help develop dementia-friendly communities.

It’s part of a challenge set by Prime Minister David Cameron to develop community awareness of people living with dementia.

The seven schools will be taking part in a celebration event with some of the older people they have worked with in Exeter today (Monday 20 May).

The schools are Clyst Heath and St Leonard’s primaries and St Luke’s College in Exeter, Tavistock Community College, Okehampton College Copplestone Primary and Spreyton School.

Schools across Devon are becoming interactive theatres during a series of Healthy Lifestyle Weeks designed to formulate a programme which could ultimately be rolled out across all schools.

Bicton College has had more reason to celebrate after achieving a ‘good’ grade in a recent Ofsted Care Standards inspection. This happens every four years and looks at the residential provision offered to students; aspects include the quality of service, outcomes for young people, the management system, and safeguarding measures.

A Newton Abbot school has become more environmentally friendly with the installation of a school biomass boiler heating system, supported by Lloyds TSB Commercial Banking.

Stover School, founded in 1932, is an independent co-educational day and boarding school teaching three to 18-year-olds. The County Council raised the European flag at County Hall today (9 May) to mark International Europe Day 2013.

South West Water creates 20 new apprenticeships

Up to 20 new apprenticeships are now being offered by South West Water as its successful programme is expanded.

The majority of the chosen trainees will be working within the company's waste water and drinking water teams and responsible for operating and maintaining assets such as pumping stations and large treatment works. A further three apprentices will work in the technical services team and will learn how to install, repair and maintain South West Water's electrical and process control systems.
