Find World Book Day costumes for free in Devon libraries

Libraries Unlimited is partnering with Recycle Devon to bring World Book Day costume swap rails to 15 libraries in Devon. World Book Day 2026 is Thursday, 5th March and library swap rails are running from 16th February to 8th March. Customers are invited to donate outgrown, unwanted children’s costumes in good, wearable condition. Costumes will be available to take home for free!

Students Discover During BSL Celebration Week

Students have been celebrating the anniversary of the recognition of BSL as an official UK language with a week of activities. This included a visit to the local museum and motivating talks from four Deaf role models. The week reinforced the importance of the official acknowledgement of minority languages and the pride we take in using BSL.

Local primary schools take part in Cool Maths Week

School children from Stoke Hill Junior School, Clyst Hydon Primary School, Chagford Primary School, Sidmouth Primary School, St Michael's Church of England Primary School and The Duchy School joined Exeter Junior School pupils in an entertaining 'Cool Maths Show' held at Exeter School on Tuesday 11 March as part of 'Maths Week 2014'.

Ben Bradshaw backs sign language celebration campaign

Exeter MP Ben Bradshaw, is one of many who have joined an online campaign this week, to celebrate British Sign Language (BSL).

The BSL Celebration Week Campaign run by Exeter Deaf Academy, SignUp BSL and Deafinite Interpreters hopes to get as many people as possible filming themselves signing their name.

The organisations have created a video guide to allow everyone to take part and all footage is shared over Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. The week’s events can be followed using the hashtag #loveBSL

MPs open new school at Bicton College

Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Rt Hon Owen Paterson, MP, and local MP for East Devon, Rt Hon Hugo Swire, MP, opened the new Animal Husbandry School at Bicton College this week to offer their support for a new era of animal care education which includes the Rare Breeds Survival Trust.

Thousands of children across the UK will be able to learn 11 basic phrases in British Sign Language thanks to a video created by a national charity.

Local author visits Exeter School

Exeter School welcomed a visit from Exmoor author and farmer, Victoria Eveleigh, on World Book Day.

Victoria's visit coincided with the launch of her latest book, 'Joe and the Race to Rescue'.

She was joined by her husband Chris who illustrates her delightful horse stories for boys and girls aged 8 - 13.

Victoria gave a talk to senior and junior pupils about her work and inspiration. Exeter School pupils asked lots of interesting questions and their books were signed by the literary couple.

Exeter's new outdoor Home Education Group

Exeter Forest School have launched a brand new outdoor Home Education Group for young children and teenagers in Exeter and the surrounding areas.

The group will begin as straight-forward forest-school, eg. den-building, bush-craft, free-play and aims to be able to develop, weaving in some elements of the school curriculum with underlying forest school activity themes.

Almost winning is just as good for some gamblers

A new study led by the University of Exeter and Swansea University claims researchers have pinpointed the changes in the brain that lead gamblers to react in the same way to near-misses as they do to winning.

The research shows that near-misses are underpinned by increases in the brain’s electrical activity, particularly in the theta frequency range - known to be involved in processing win and loss outcomes.

They found that these increases in theta are linked to both how severe someone’s gambling history is and how susceptible they might be to developing a future gambling...
