Exeter College has launched Devon’s first Women’s Cricket Academy based at a non‑fee‑paying college, offering an exceptional new opportunity for young female cricketers to develop their cricketing potential alongside their academic studies.

Ahead of a busy summer season the side is actively recruiting new players. This will begin with trials on Thursday 30 April at Buzz About Cricket’s indoor facility in Cullompton, and aspiring players joining the College this September are now being encouraged to register their interest.

Neil Parish has welcomed the Government’s announcement that schools in some of the least fairly funded local areas in the country will benefit from a £390 million cash boost in the biggest step towards fairer schools funding in a decade. The schools budget in Devon will increase by £16.7 million making a real difference to children in Tiverton and Honiton.

Schools in Tiverton and Honiton will see their per pupil funding increase by 4.7% or £194.

Schools in the least fairly funded local areas across the South West will benefit from a £390 million cash boost in the biggest step towards fairer schools funding in a decade, Schools Minister David Laws has announced.

In March, the Government announced that it would take action to tackle the unfair and complicated system of allocating local school funding, and launched a consultation on how to deliver an additional £350 million to schools in the least fairly funded areas by setting minimum funding levels.

An Exeter educational trust is being recommended to run Cranbrook’s new two to 16 all-through school.

The trust already numbers Isca, St James and Whipton Barton infants and junior schools among its members.

Named after distinguished Exeter educationist Ted Wragg, the trust is led by Exeter University, Exeter College, Flybe and EDF.

New schools cannot be set up by local authorities but have to be run by sponsors.

New tougher primary school tests in maths and English will further the government’s objective of ensuring nobody leaves school without being able to read or write and with a solid grounding in maths, Education Minister Elizabeth Truss said yesterday (Monday 14 July).

Sixth formers launch camera into space

Exeter School sixth formers have successfully launched a camera into space where it took hundreds of photos of earth from 82,000ft.

The camera was carried by helium balloon into the stratosphere in a joint project between the School's Physics Department, Electronics Department and Crossing Club on Monday 30 June.

Okehampton College has won a national competition which recognises the school’s cutting edge Green initiatives.

The prize is a £150,000 energy makeover from British Gas.

Okehampton was chosen from six finalists nationally in the secondary school category.

It will donate £25,000 of the prize money to the runners-up – Fulham Cross in London – to help support their own energy projects.

The school is planning to use the prize to install a second biomass heater to warm the older buildings on site.
