Find World Book Day costumes for free in Devon libraries

Libraries Unlimited is partnering with Recycle Devon to bring World Book Day costume swap rails to 15 libraries in Devon. World Book Day 2026 is Thursday, 5th March and library swap rails are running from 16th February to 8th March. Customers are invited to donate outgrown, unwanted children’s costumes in good, wearable condition. Costumes will be available to take home for free!

Four Devon schools chosen to boost global links

Four Devon primary schools, including one in Exeter, have been chosen to take part in a national initiative aimed at developing global education.

Redhills primary and pre-school in Exeter, Lady Modiford’s in Walkhampton and Meavy and Offwell schools have been selected to develop international links with Tanzania as part of a major new school twinning project.

Call for children to be taught lifesaving CPR

People in the South West believe children should be taught CPR in schools, according to new research by the British Heart Foundation (BHF).

The BHF polled over 2,000 people and found that 89% of people in the South West thought that children should leave secondary school knowing the life-saving skill.

More than 30,000 people have a cardiac arrest outside of hospital, but less than one-in-ten survive - partly because people don’t have the skills or confidence to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Youngsters get an insight into Medical School

School children from Devon and Cornwall were given a hands-on insight into life as a medical student as part of a programme designed to encourage Westcountry youngsters to consider a career in medicine. Volunteers from EDF Energy have helped Devon Wildlife Trust improve a wildlife garden at an Exeter school, as part of the ongoing Exeter Wild City project.

The garden at Stoke Hill Infants School now has much improved disabled access while new homes have been created for wildlife including beetles, newts and frogs.

Ofsted success for village primary school

A Mid Devon village school has been praised by education inspectors for making learning enjoyable and achieving above average standards.

They have rated Rackenford primary as a good school across the board.

They say the quality of teaching and the achievement of pupils is good, as is the behaviour and safety of the children and the leadership and management.

Schools in some of the least fairly funded areas across the South West will soon benefit from a £68 million cash boost in the biggest step towards fairer schools funding in a decade, Schools Minister David Laws has announced.

Year 12 students from across the region gathered at the first ever Exeter Progression Student Conference on Saturday 29 November. The Conference, held at the University of Exeter’s Streatham Campus, marked the launch of Exeter Progression, which is giving students from Devon and Cornwall the opportunity to expand their knowledge and explore Higher Education. Playgroup celebrates successful Ofsted report

An long-standing Exeter play group is celebrating another successful inspection report as it prepares to welcome even more children.

Park Play Group has operated in Exeter for more than 30 years and is now based at Redhills Primary School.

The play group is currently building an extension which means it will be able to welcome two-year-olds next month along with the three and four-year-olds it currently accepts.

Exeter pupil honoured at charity book launch

After half a million people have fled their homes due to Typhoon Hagupit, drawings and paintings by the UK’s best young artists, including a pupil of St Leonards C of E Primary School, Exeter, were published on Tuesday 9 December in a new picture book entitled The Day The Wind Blew.

The new book is the culmination of a UK-wide illustration competition jointly launched by disaster relief charity ShelterBox and national charity The Reading Agency’s Chatterbooks network of children’s reading groups. The book has already enjoyed endorsement from top authors.
