Even more employment opportunities have been made available to students in Newton Abbot as a pioneering technical institution has made its employer partner collaboration with the Royal Navy official.

Captain David Joyce from the Royal Navy attended the charter signing and will now help shape the curriculum, provide Challenge Projects and offer work experience to ensure South Devon UTC students are ready for work when they finish Year 13.

During the visit, Captain Joyce met Ian Crews, Principal, Kerry Eldershaw, Head of Engineering and Barry Seager, Employer Liaison Officer to discuss future partnering opportunities. A working lunch gave students looking to apply to the Royal Navy a chance to quiz Captain Joyce who gave the prospective applicants advice on how to reach their career goals.

Accompanied by Principal Crews and a handful of students, Captain Joyce finished his visit by signing the charter which now makes the Royal Navy an official employer partner of South Devon UTC.

Principal Ian Crews commented: “We were delighted to welcome Captain David Joyce of the Royal Navy to South Devon UTC to mark this commemorative occasion. We are committed to providing young people with first class employment opportunities for when they leave us. The Royal Navy joins a range of other leading regional employers who help shape the curriculum here at South Devon UTC. These companies give our students the skills they need to be ‘work ready’ and progress in their chosen fields.”

Other leading regional employers and founding partners of South Devon UTC include: Centrax, Galliford Try, Linden Homes, South West Water, the Environment Agency, Teignbridge District Council and national charity, Water Aid.

The curriculum at South Devon UTC is driven by developing skills for employment, particularly focusing on the science and engineering sectors. The college is currently recruiting students for the 2018/19 academic year. Young people with a flair for science and engineering due to start Year 10 or Year 12 in September 2018 are invited to contact the college for more information.
