Dictionaries for Life presentation to Countess Wear Community School

Rotary Club of Exeter Enterprise has for several years had an association with Countess Wear Community School and it has been a privilege to share and be associated with their success. Their assembly on Thursday 18 July was just such an occasion.

Very near the end of the summer term it was a prize giving in more ways than one. This school has many children with special needs and has for many years had a unit for children with hearing impairment. They were all in the hall to receive prizes and commendations for their efforts throughout the year, and also to receive their Dictionaries for Life from Rotary. Maureen, John and Fiona were there to make the presentations, with the aid of the acting headteacher.

The dictionaries are just a part of the rite of passage from Primary to Secondary, as these children move from one phase of education to another and they give us an opportunity to stress the value of literacy to these young people. As you can see, it is fascinating to observe the children who suddenly become completely engrossed in a new book.

Christmas come early!
