Westbank’s warm welcome for the community this winter

Westbank Community Health and Care has opened the doors of its warm, welcoming winter space for the communities of Exminster and Starcross, and is trialling a new shuttle service two days a week to help local people get there.

Warmwell at Westbank is within the charity’s recently revamped Community Hub and is open Monday - Friday from 10am for anyone seeking a welcoming, heated space during the daytime where they can share a cuppa and conversation during the colder months, including over the festive season. The date of this years’ Exeter Chiefs Foundation Smile A Mile Charity Walk has been confirmed as Saturday, 21st September 2019.

Come and join us in walking 10 miles in aid of the Foundation in a circular route which starts and finishes at Sandy Park, and takes in a flat, scenic route through the River Exe Valley.

The event will combine both the fundraising walk with watching the Exeter Chiefs V Bath Rugby Premiership Cup Game at Sandy Park.

Quiz night for Children's Hospice South West

Age UK Mid Devon tackles loneliness with new programme funded by £1m from the Masonic Charitable Foundation

Age UK Mid Devonis supporting older people as part of a three year programme to help older people feel less lonely and get the most out of later life, funded by the Masonic Charitable Foundation (MCF), the freemason’s charity.

The grant of £63,000, awarded on behalf of freemasons from the Province of Devonshire, is part of a £1 million grant from the MCF to Age UK. The MCF is funded by freemasons, their families and friends, from across England and Wales.

SOUTH WEST cyclists are being urged to use peddle power to raise money for Cancer Research UK this September.

The charity is launching its Cancer Research UK Cycle 300 challenge. It is urging men and women to sign up now and then choose how, when and where to clock up 300 miles on a bike next month.

There are many ways to hit the 300-mile mark. Commuters can to notch up ten miles a day on their cycle to work. Weekend enthusiasts can plan epic 75-mile routes through rolling countryside, while gym bunnies can step up the spin classes to hit their target.

Exeter Specsavers raises funds for deaf charity

EXETER Specsavers store cranked up the cuteness factor when it played host to precious puppies from the Hearing Dogs for Deaf People charity.

Audiologists from the store’s Hearcare team arranged the fundraising day to launch its support of the charity, with the aim of raising thousands of pounds.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People trains dogs to alert deaf people to important sounds and danger signals, providing independence, confidence and companionship.

Two weeks to go until the 20th annual Michelmores 5k Charity Run

On Thursday 5 September, the Michelmores 5k Charity Run will take place on Exeter's Cathedral Green, with over 1000 runners taking part to raise money for a great cause.

The 5k Charity Run is the South West's largest corporate running event and has raised over £300,000 for local charities over its 20-year history.

The day will showcase an impressive range of cars and costumes from popular films including Transformers, Batman, Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, Disney Pixar’s Cars and many more.

Visitors can expect to come across Darth Vader, Star Wars Storm Troopers, Iron Man, RoboCop, Batman, Spiderman, Captain Jack Sparrow and chimps from Planet of the Apes, provided by look-alikes company UK Garrison.

Devoted daughter takes on half marathon for brain injured dad

Brave runner and fundraiser, Alice Carlo, has been inspired by the experience of her father to take on the Bournemouth Half Marathon.

Alice, who is currently studying at the University of Bournemouth, tells us, “In 2014 my Dad suffered from a severe stroke, causing him to be partially paralysed and leaving him with little speech, hearing or site. He now receives support from the team at Headway Devon’s centre in Exeter on a weekly basis where he is able to socialise and take part in activities. Veterans with dogs bags £4,000 from Tesco’s community grant scheme

Veterans With Dogs is delighted to announce it has bagged £4,000 from Tesco’s Bags of Help community grant scheme.

Bags of Help is run in partnership with environmental charity Groundwork, and sees grants awarded to thousands of local community projects every year. Since launching in 2015, it’s provided more than £79 million to over 26,000 local community projects.

Millions of shoppers have voted in Tesco stores up and down the country and it can now be revealed Veterans With Dogs has been awarded£4,000.

£3,900 raised for ambulance trusts during RGB’s charity golf day

RGB Building Supplies’ annual golf day, held at Bovey Castle on Thursday 11th July, raised a fantastic £3,908 for the Devon Air Ambulance Trust and Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust. The tournament was won by a team representing RGB’s Exeter-based kitchen and bathroom showroom The Room Works.

The day, organised in association with Exeter City FC, saw 28 teams made up of suppliers, customers and staff take part in the four-ball competition, with The Room Works team taking home the Andy Shinner Memorial Trophy.
