Local community groups in Exeter and the local area, are being thrown a lifeline as a new British non-profit, GatherUK, launches to combat the rising "cost of connection" imposed by global tech giants. Three teams of intrepid adventurers from Exeter-based housebuilder Wain Homes hiked more than 20 miles in one day across the three highest hills of the Peak District, raising £12,000 for a youth charity.

Wain Homes contributed the registration fees for 13 employees to take on the sponsored challenge of climbing 1,300m up Kinder Scout, Bleaklow and The Black Hill. The walk is an epic adventure which covers the wildest and most remote areas of the Peak District National Park.

On a warm sunny Saturday evening on the 27th August, 48 intrepid swimmers bared all in aid of the mental health charity MIND Devon.

After nervously assembling on the poolside, at the allotted hour of 7.30pm the gathered group all dropped their towels and jumped naked and costume-free into the beautifully warm water of the Topsham Lido.

Charity launches online fashion campaign to help homeless people in Exeter

An Exeter-based homelessness charity launches a rolling online fashion show next week, in a bid to raise money for people without a home in the city, as the winter approaches and the cost of living crisis deepens.

In a campaign timed to launch on World Homeless Day (Monday 10 October), St Petrock’s, which provides food, clothes, survival equipment and other services for rough sleepers and those in temporary accommodation, is asking local people to #PoseforStPetrocks in its vintage clothing shop.

Charity’s furniture upcycling workshop for unemployed gets funding boost

Exeter Community Initiatives (ECI), a local charity based in Exeter, has received a £10,195 funding boost to run a furniture upcycling workshop for the unemployed.

Funded by the European Social Fund, the 10-week workshop starts on 7 October but will accept starters for up to three weeks. It is open to anyone registered unemployed or economically inactive and considering moving towards employment or education.

Employees from an Exeter-based company are taking part in a month-long walkathon to raise money for Brain Tumour Research .

A 25-strong team from Shipman Financial Planning is aiming, with the help of 10 others from parent company Amber River, to walk more than 40,000 kilometres (24,901 miles) throughout September – the equivalent distance of travelling around the world.

The team from Shipman is fundraising for Brain Tumour Research after financial administrative assistant, Louise Pickering lost her mum, Angela Linnell to the disease 26 years ago.
