Exeter charity launches free "Joy Rides" to help people get cycling again

Ride On is launching a new, free cycling programme aimed at beginners, people returning to cycling after a break, or anyone looking for a sociable ride to help them get back outside this summer.

Called Joy Rides, the sessions launch on Saturday 18 July and run weekly through to September, alternating between Saturday mornings and Wednesday evenings to fit around work, family, and shift patterns. Each ride follows one of three easy, mostly traffic-free routes around Exeter Quay, the Exe estuary, and Topsham, led by trained ride leaders and open to all abilities.

Chiefs get behind Exeter homelessness charity’s Christmas campaign

A city homelessness charity will receive a huge boost from Saturday, as its Christmas campaign film is broadcast to thousands of fans at a high profile match, in the Exeter Chiefs stadium.

Shown on the giant screens around the pitch, St Petrock’s short fundraising video , featuring Coldplay’s Christmas Lights, will be viewed by vast crowds at the big game between the Chiefs and Bulls.

Boost for Children’s Hospice South West

Children’s Hospice South West, the children’s charity providing care for children and young people with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions and their families across Devon, Somerset and Cornwall, has been boosted by a contribution from Bloor Homes.

The funds will be used by the charity to continue its provision of a range of on-site services at its three hospices located in Barnstaple, Bristol and St Austell. It will also help the charity further the ‘at-home’ support services, which emerged as a result of the pandemic.

Ukrainian opera singer from Exeter features in concert raising over 5,000 for British Red Cross’s Ukraine appeal

A concert featuring a Ukrainian opera singer in Devon has raised more than £5,000 for the British Red Cross’s Ukraine appeal.

The concert took place on November 12, 2022, at Luppitt Village Hall in East Devon, featuring musical acts, an auction and a raffle.

Ukrainian mezzo-soprano Iryna Ilnytska, who lives in Exeter, opened the night with two songs – a Ukrainian lullaby and a folk song called ‘The Moon in the Sky’.

David Kalisch, from Combe Raleigh, and Roger Hicks, from Luppitt, organised the event and also appeared as busking duo Blue Sky.

Missing People launch campaign in partnership with Stagecoach to reach people in crisis before they disappear

UK charity Missing People, along with Stagecoach, the UK’s largest bus and coach operator, have joined together on a campaign that will encourage people in crisis to call the free and confidential helpline before they think of disappearing.

The charity confirmed that it is hearing first-hand that financial issues like not being able to pay bills, unpaid debt, and food insecurity are driving people to think about going missing. In response, the charity launched a new preventative campaign in October to reach more people in crisis.

Local homebuilder, Persimmon Homes has announced exciting changes to Community Champions, the company’s generous charitable scheme which has given over £1.5m in the last two years alone to over 5,000 charities, sports clubs and local organisations in Britain.

Princesshay welcomed the Charity Christmas Tree Festival to a new central location on Bedford Street in Exeter for its 10th year on Thursday 17th November.

The illuminated festival, featuring 35 Charity Trees, is now on display until the New Year.

In the last 10 years, the Charity Christmas Tree Festival has supported hundreds of local charities raising both money and awareness of their causes.

Charities that have participated include, FORCE Cancer Charity, Children’s Hospice South West and CEDA, Princesshay’s current Charity partner of the year.
