RSPCA in action as storms batter Britain

Fifty of the RSPCA’s specially trained rescue teams have been out rescuing animals affected by the storms across England.

The RSPCA has received around 150 calls for its help specifically for flood related incidents. From the 29th December 2013 to the 2nd January 2014, the RSPCA has been called to 149 incidents and assisted in the rescue of over 130 animals.

Exeter Chamber helps raise hundreds for local charities

Exeter Chamber of Commerce helped eight local charities raise over £900 at their Christmas Charity Auction Lunch last week, held at the Mercure Exeter Southgate Hotel.

Paul Nero, chief executive of Radio Exe was the auctioneer on the day, taking bids from over 100 business people that were in attendance. Items for auction included an Exeter Chiefs Rugby weekend experience for two, in aid of St Loyes Foundation, and a beautiful framed print of the cover photo of the BBC Radio Devon Countryside Calendar from Devon Community Foundation.

RSPCA set for busy Christmas

The RSPCA is braced for a busy festive period after dealing with a bumper number of calls about cruelty over Christmas last year (2012).

Last year staff answered 833 calls about neglect and cruelty on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day – 53 per cent more than the same period in 2011.

Calls to help collect injured and abandoned animals were also up by about a third (32%) from 584 in 2011 to 769 last year.

Exeter School raises over £4,700 for charity in one month

On Thursday 12 December, Exeter School’s Sixth Form girls played a charity football match to raise money for the school’s charities with the Lower Sixth beating the Upper Sixth 2-0. Since mid-November, pupils, parents and teachers have raised an astonishing £4,700 through cake sales, mufti days, Movember and collections at the schools’ Advent service and carol concert. Shelter: over 2000 homeless children

2,082 children in the South West are homeless and living in temporary accommodation, according to the latest government figures.

The new statistics recorded at the end of September mean that, across Britain, nearly 85,000 children now face the reality of waking up homeless this Christmas morning. Shelter is warning that as the rising cost of living and cuts to the housing safety net continue to take their toll, many more parents are likely to find themselves facing an ongoing struggle to keep a roof over their children’s heads.
