A South American wine tasting evening at the Deer Park Hotel, Honiton has raised more than £1700 for Hospiscare.
Wine expert Susy Atkins, who appears on BBC1’s Saturday Kitchen introduced the evening and explained why she had selected the wines. She explained their characteristics and why the specially chosen South American tapas complimented each wine.

Hospiscare trustee Nick Ag-Manning, Mark Godfery of Deer Park and Jane Clarke of Rock Mill Design put the event together to raise funds for the local hospice.

Nick said: ‘’ It was an excellent event in fantastic surroundings provided by The Deer Park Country Hotel. There was great enthusiasm for the event and I cannot wait to hold another one later in the year.’’

Proceeds from the evening will go towards the building of a new state-of-the-art day hospice in Honiton. The day hospice will feature spa-like treatment rooms, a large and comfortable patient lounge, a beautiful garden, plus educational facilities for the training of healthcare professionals and students, and access to palliative care specialists for support, advice or treatment. The hospice aims to bring care closer to home for thousands of people with terminal illnesses in East Devon.

Sarah Smith, Hospiscare’s East Devon Appeal Fundraiser hopes that similar events in the future will continue to support the Hospice appeal and Susy Atkin’s has expressed an interest in continuing her support for the appeal.
Hospiscare needs £250,000 to complete and run the new day hospice, which is expected to open in summer 2014. For more information on how to get involved with the East Devon Day Hospice Appeal call Sarah Smith on 01392 688063 or email s.smith@hospiscare.co.uk.
