Secretary of State Visits Exeter College to Talk T Levels

The Secretary of State for Education Gavin Williamson MP visited Exeter College to learn more about the impact new T Level qualifications will have on the region’s learners.  

As a government-selected ‘early adopter’ of the new technical-based qualification, Exeter College is the only provider in Devon offering T Levels for 2020 delivery, with courses initially available in Construction, Digital and Education and Childcare. Further T Level courses will launch from 2021 as part of a national roll out.

The South West Institute of Technology (SWIOT) Digital and Data Centre at Exeter College has been signed off as part of a wider plan to revolutionise digital, engineering and manufacturing technology education across the region. The new £11million building will be at the heart of the college and located on its Hele Road site in what is great news for the college, city and region.

A flooring retailer has marked the opening of its new £100,000 store in Newton Abbot by pledging its support for a local mental health support charity.

Flooring Superstore opened on the Kingsteignton Trading Estate, Pottery Road, in September.

The official opening was carried out by representatives of Step One Charity, which supports people to manage their mental health, achieve employment goals and live more independently.

A former Exeter College student is helping to break the glass ceiling in the aviation industry, having secured a landmark £25,000 scholarship with pilot training provider L3 Airline Academy.  

Miryam Ley, 18, is set to follow her father’s footsteps on to the flight deck having been selected as one of only 10 successful applicants across Europe for the L3 Pilot Pathways Female Scholarship; a new scheme designed to help more women in to training to become a pilot.

Honiton business owner Lucy Wakefield is this month celebrating the 5th anniversary of running her  dog sitting business, Barking Mad. Despite her business success, it hasn’t all been plain sailing. The story of why she started the business revolves around giving up a career she loved due to a health scare and losing her beloved Newfoundland, Kodiak.

Exeter College’s vocational students joined together to celebrate their achievements in a garden party held at the college’s Hele Road campus.

Vocational and technical qualifications offer a more practical and applied style of study and are offered by a range of awarding bodies but at Exeter College BTEC, UAL and City & Guilds are the three largest.

One thing that can be said about modern-day iGaming industry is that the market has been oversaturated. There are hundreds of online venues where people can go in order to enjoy themselves a game of their picking. The noise is only getting louder, and all of the venues are only becoming more and more homogenous. As a result, many websites are simply losing or unable to acquire clients, because the next website will be just like them.

Next Steps South West’s work at Exeter College is set to continue as the National Collaborative Outreach Programme has been extended for a further two academic years, with a new completion date of 31 July 2021.  

Established in January 2017, Next Steps South West (NSSW) operates out of 14 partner universities and colleges throughout Cornwall, Devon and Somerset with the aim of providing impartial advice to young people who are trying to navigate their journey to higher education.

Regional housebuilder Persimmon Homes South West has shortlisted three groups supporting under-18s to go forward for a chance to win up to £100,000 through its Building Futures campaign.

The groups have been selected from three categories targeting grassroots sports groups, health organisations and arts & education projects.

 Shine 21 Dorset Down Syndrome Buddy Club will represent the arts & education category at the national final, North Devon Marlins Swim Academy has been selected to represent sport and Compass Disability Services health.
