Budget Bites by Haines Watts

Pensions & Savings

Business owners will be disappointed that the Chancellor has reduced the amount they can save for retirement over their lifetime from £1.25m to £1m. Only a few years ago, the lifetime limit was £1.8m - so this represents a massive reduction in the ability to save for retirement. The good news is that the annual allowance has not reduced as was feared, so the opportunity still exists to save a significant sum this year. Business owners may want to use this year’s allowance and any unused allowance for the last three years prior to the year end, rather than...

Chancellor's 'kitchen sink' budget!

We might have expected George Osborne to throw everything but the kitchen sink at today. Instead, he provided us with a fully funded budget, and didn't spend the money on cheap giveaways. How very grown up of him - but he's kept plenty of wriggle room to offer some stunning manifesto pledges on IHT. At current interest rates cash ISAs were fairly pointless before, but now are likely to be unnecessary for the vast majority of savers. The new £1,000 tax allowance for savers means you’d need to have cash savings of more than £100,000 at one per cent interest to need to shelter any of it from...

Exeter workers are masters of many trades

More than half of Exeter professionals (55%) say they are seeing more people in their industry with multiple jobs compared to five years ago.

These ‘portfolio job holders’ work for more than one employer, potentially offering more than one service. This is a key finding of recent research from Regus, the world’s largest provider of flexible workspace. The survey canvassed the opinions of business owners and senior managers in Exeter on their attitudes and approaches to work.

The findings show that working practices have changed considerably, even in as little as five years...

Businesses join Park & Change scheme

Businesses are signing up to an innovative new scheme that aims to tackle/reduce traffic congestion in Exeter.

As well as reducing congestion and pollution, Park & Change will also help commuters get active through walking and cycling, and save money on fuel and parking costs by encouraging them to switch to alternative forms of transport for part of their journey.

The sites in support of the new scheme are Darts Farm (Topsham), Westpoint (Clyst St Mary), Woodleigh Coach House (Cheriton Bishop), Fingle Glen Golf Hotel (Tedburn) and a site in Pinhoe, totalling over 100...

You could run this seafront cafe

East Devon District Council is offering an exciting opportunity to run a cafe in a stunning seafront location on the Jurassic Coast in Seaton.

The Chine Cafe and the public toilets to the rear of the building are available on a 25 year lease with the opportunity for the new tenant to combine both buildings to provide a larger cafe/restaurant facility.

The cafe, located on the end of West Walk, has been empty since the previous lease expired last year. The public toilets currently open during the summer season only and the expectation is that these will become integral to...
