Once again, the short-list for the Devon Farm Business awards presents a fascinating cross-section of what is happening in farming in the West Country.

The common threads running through all of the farm businesses which are up for an award at the presentation evening on the eve of this year’s Devon County Show (May 19-21) are enterprise, innovation, market focus and family farming.

An Exeter man has scooped the title of Apprentice of the Year from his employer Western Power Distribution (WPD).

Daniel Bickham, 24, from Kingsteignton, Newton Abbott, won the coveted title for the company’s South West region after joining WPD in September 2013 as an apprentice Jointer.

New deal puts local pork on the menu

Business continues to go from strength to strength for an Exeter family farm.

The Freemantle family has been farming pigs at Kenniford Farm on the outside of Exeter for more than 20 years.

And the farm had just signed a deal with a local pub chain Webb Enterprises to supply three local pubs with its Red Tractor approved pork.

Public consultation for second phase superfast broadband programme launches

A public consultation is being launched on Wednesday 6 April to kickstart the next stage in the rollout of superfast broadband in Devon and Somerset.
