Uplyme flood improvement scheme complete

Work on a £250,000 flood improvement scheme in Uplyme has been completed.

New culverts have been installed through Uplyme village hall car park, as well as under the B3165 Lyme Road and Pound Lane, in order to carry flood water away from the village centre, which suffers the greatest risk of flooding.

The improvements in Uplyme have reduced the flood risk to 12 properties and regular flooding to the highway.

The scheme, developed by Devon County Council’s flood risk management team, has been funded with contributions from Devon County Council, Flood Defence Grant in Aid, local levy and East Devon District Council.

Councillor Roger Croad, Devon County Council Cabinet Member with responsibility for flood risk management, said: "This is a good example of how our local communities can benefit from partnership working. Thanks to this scheme, homes and businesses in Uplyme now have improved resilience from flooding which I'm sure will be welcomed by the local community."

Councillor Ian Hall, Devon County Councillor for Axminster, said: "Now that the works have been completed Uplyme will see the benefits from the improvements. I would personally like to thank all the stakeholders, and especially Uplyme Parish Council, Devon County Council and East Devon District Council, for the partnership needed for the implementation of the scheme. Also, thank you to all the residents who have endured the road diversions for the greater good of the area."

Councillor Ian Thomas, East Devon District Council Leader and Councillor for Trinity ward which includes Uplyme, said: “I am pleased that flood prevention works have been completed and the risk of flooding to properties near the Village Centre reduced. The 2012 floods caused great disruption, damage and distress for local residents. By working together to co-fund recent works, local authorities have ensured they can sleep more soundly when heavy rain falls on Uplyme.”
