The Met Office has issued another severe weather warning for Devon, as heavy and prolonged showers are set to return today.

The warning is valid until noon on Tuesday 5 January.

Some 5-10mm of rain could fall in an hour at times locally.  Through the whole period of the warning an additional 10-20mm is expected quite widely across the area and very locally up to 40 mm, mainly over high ground.

Given the saturated ground, surface water flooding is possible.

Strong, gusty winds will be an additional hazard in places with gusts of 50mph possible around some exposed coasts in the extreme South West on Monday where large waves are also likely.

A flood warning is in place for the River Clyst from Broadclyst to Clyst St Mary, including Ashclyst, Clyston Mill, Sowton Barton, Newcourt Barton, the A3052 at Clyst Honiton and the B3181 at Broadclyst.

Flood alerts are in place for the Rivers Clyst and Culm and their tributaries, the Lower Exe area from Tiverton to Exeter (including Bickleigh and Stone Canon) and the rivers Creedy, Yeo, Little Dart, Lapford Yeo and their tributaries.

Keep up to date with the latest flood alerts for the South West here.

The Met Office five-day forecast is as follows:

Today:
Frequent showers or prolonged spells of rain, locally heavy, with some localised flooding in places for the start of the working week. It will be a breezy day for most, with coastal gales and large waves in the far southwest. Maximum Temperature 10°C.

Tonight:
There will be very little change overnight, with a mixture of clear spells and occasional showers for many. The showers will be most frequent and heavy near western coasts. Minimum Temperature 6°C.

Tuesday:
There will be a mixture of bright or sunny spells and showers for many. The most frequent showers near western coasts and hills, where heavy with hail and thunder possible. Maximum Temperature 10°C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:
Mostly dry, bright and less windy on Wednesday. Rain and strong winds moving northeast Wednesday night into Thursday followed by brighter and showery conditions for most by Friday.
