In the last 12 months more than 5,000 LED lights have been fitted in Devon businesses and organisations.

This major energy switch stands to save businesses involved over £100,000 and 439 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to the energy use of an average house for 33 years, according to SunGift Energy Ltd.

Working with Devon businesses, including Westpoint Arena and Pecorama, law firms Ashfords LLP and Stephens Scown as well as six primary schools and three medical practices, SunGift Energy LED projects have saved money, energy and have improved lighting.

Fred Thomson, Renewable Energy Efficiency Surveyor, SunGift Energy, says: “It’s really encouraging to see Devon businesses tackling their energy usage responsibly. The LED lights installed in Devon in the last 12 months would be expected to last in the region of an average of 18 years.  So in that time, these organisations could expect to save over £1.9 million on energy bills while reducing their carbon footprint by 7,900 tonnes.”

Up to 40% of a building’s electricity use comes from lighting and switching from incandescent lighting to LED is something being seen increasingly across Devon’s business landscape to reduce energy costs.

Jaime Thornton, Office Manager, Stephens Scown LLP said: “We are focused on keeping up-to-date with energy efficiency, we are already seeing significant financial savings and our offices are more clearly lit, so LEDs are a win-win for us.”

LED lights are seeing a huge surge in popularity not just due to the energy and cost savings but also as they can improve working environments, be operated with intelligent controls such as sensors and are lower maintenance.

Fred Thomson, SunGift, said: "In some of our recent projects, for instance Westpoint Arena, the lighting is very hard to reach. By swapping the traditional bulbs to LEDs businesses save on maintenance costs as well as running costs.”
