Ben Bradshaw MP on the importance of early dementia diagnosis

More than half of all dementia sufferers in the South West are undiagnosed, with rates of diagnosis being as low as 35% in rural Devon.

As someone who cared for my Mother who had dementia when I was a teenager, I am acutely aware of the importance in diagnosing the disease early.

Early diagnosis means the patient can get the treatment he or she needs and the family or carers support in a situation which can be very tough and isolating.

Late diagnosis is a particular problem for a region like ours with a large elderly population and retired people who may live a long...

Why I love Exeter

About a week ago I saw a man kneeling down at the side of the road near to my house. Wondering what he could be doing I got closer and realised there was some litter on the road, which the gentleman was picking up piece by piece and putting into a bin bag. At the time I walked on by humming along to my music and didn’t think any more about it.

Later on in the evening, though, I started thinking about what I had seen earlier that day. I thought about the area I was from in Birmingham and whether someone would do this there. The short answer is probably not.

I get a real...

Gorillas in the midst of Exeter's City Centre

Yesterday (Saturday 3 August) saw the arrival of a rather unusual breed of tourist to the streets, parks and open spaces of Exeter. Welcomed by young and old alike, 11 life-sized gorilla sculptures have taken up residence around the City of Exeter as part of the Great Gorillas Project - an art trail created to help celebrate Paignton Zoo's 90th Birthday as well as raise funds and awareness for the Zoo's vital conservation work spanning the globe.

These 11 cheeky characters, along with 19 others located throughout the English Riviera, will play an instrumental role in efforts to...

Fantasy Jukebox - 3. Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy

Imagine a fantasy jukebox that contained all the most influential, innovative, adventurous and just plain great music since the dawn of the recording era. OK, so the likes of iTunes, YouTube and Spotify have made this more of a reality than a fantasy, but setting aside their rather indiscriminating presence, what should it include?

Continuing a series exploring some of the key musical statements of the recording era, Matthew Vizard picks a game-changing British hip-hop-soul masterpiece.

Green Action August Comment: Whose Democracy?

Authored by Martyn Goss

In a democratic society any government should be judged by both how it has deepened and enhanced democracy, and by the quality of life it leaves for future generations. On these two criteria our recent politicians do not have much to be proud of. In my view, they have been short-sighted, especially (though not exclusively) by the way they have failed to recognise and act urgently to address climate change, and by the way our (albeit immature) democratic processes have been eroded.

More and more powers have been removed from the English regions and from local authorities, at a time...

A sketch of Spain

“I've never seen an English person smile. Is that because of their bad teeth?”

It came as a bit of a shock when, during my year abroad in Spain, I discovered the stereotypes that Spanish people have of the English. As well as poor dental hygiene, they seem to believe we are a race of silent, serious people, who drink tea from dawn till dusk while discussing the Royal Family. We are also stressed all the time and definitely have no idea how to 'fiesta'.

Now, I agree that the Spanish are champions of partying, but a main factor in this, of course, is the differences between...

Who's Guilty of this?

We are always surprised by the proportion of businesses that don’t open their emails or respond to voicemail or telephone messages on a regular basis and we wonder what level of business is being lost by this apathetic approach? In the last week alone we know of several approaches made to businesses to make enquiries or to place orders for products or services where no-one has responded. Admittedly it’s the start of the holiday period but does that mean that all business grinds to a halt during this time? We regularly hear about how tough it is out there and how many businesses would...
