Why Ultra-Thin Automatic Watches Are So Difficult to Engineer

Ultra-thin automatic watches are among the most technically demanding achievements in modern watchmaking. While adding complications often receives the most attention, reducing the thickness of a mechanical movement presents an entirely different engineering challenge. Every component must occupy less space without compromising the movement's stability, efficiency, or long-term performance. This level of mechanical sophistication is also one of the reasons why collectors often rely on an automatic watch winder when rotating several automatic timepieces, helping keep complex movements...

Blog: Student Life #1

As a second year student at the University of Exeter you’d think I’d know a fair bit about the city we live in. Hmmm…. Maybe not. I know where the campus is – does that count?

There are a few essential things to do in Exeter that I can happily say I have ticked off my bucket list – like visit the Exeter Phoenix, Cavern, the Bike Shed, Northcott Theatre – I’ve even visited both Exmouth and Dawlish. Yet, when I see posts on the internet of ‘Fresher’s Bucket List’s and whatnot, I get quite embarrassed.

I’m afraid that in a little over 18 months’ time I will leave the...

Creating Community in the face of Challenge

Earlier this week I found myself on a train between Exeter and Birmingham which was stopped at Gloucester because of a gas leak and where a two hour wait and chaos ensued. Eventually I arrived at my destination almost 3 hours late and the fragmentation of our once effective railway system is very apparent.

It is clear that the train operators and station companies do not always have contingency plans and, as usual in such situations, official communications are very poor with nobody seeming to know what is going on.

What really happens is that the institutional life of the...

Creative Artistry, Water color:

Water colors have been around from time immemorial and we’ve all dabbled around with it when we were young. However, there have been radical changes in this sphere of artistry in the past few years. There are many transformations that have been included and invented to make this medium even more beautiful. These new media, if incorporated intelligently, will help you create an everlasting piece of art.

1. Granulating Media:

As the name itself suggests, this media helps to give the appearance of ‘salt in paint’. It adds a new dimension...

The Exeter Pound – good value for local money

Authored by Martyn Goss

This week has seen the launch of a new community currency in Devon. From 1st September the Exeter Pound has been tradable in about one hundred independent businesses in and around the city. Exeter is thus joining Bristol, Totnes and a few other places in England to introduce a local money system that has no value outside its own community, but which will be worth much within it. As from now, Exonians are able to spend their own notes (one, five, ten and twenty Exeter Pound denominations, plus a 15 EP special for the Rugby World Cup!) in registered shops, cafes, pubs, leisure venues,...

Going beyond the uniform many of your colleagues are really going through IT each day.

The truth is this stuff goes deeper than being tired and over-worked.

It’s so tough, as a proud nurse to admit some days are a battle you just won’t win.

I’ve put this blog together for you in the hope that it’ll inspire YOU to be easier on yourself and know that you aren’t alone.

After chatting to many proud nurses just like you, here’s what’s frustrates them:

Shocking work life balance was HUGE. Sure, spending lots of time on long shifts...

Exeter's Soul of a New Machine - Formula Student 2015

Exeter’s Engineering students can be forever proud as the future carriers of the torch of Britain’s manufacturing heritage – for without engineers, Britain’s future to compete on the World’s stage will remain bleak.

To be frank, it is a luxury to study some less intellectually challenging subject but a real endurance and test of conviction to study engineering. The subject takes no prisoners and Exeter University certainly sets a very high standard in academic achievement. Nevertheless, engineering is about implementation and solving real problems: boldly stepping up to the plate...

How do cold callers get your number?

Doesn't it drive you mad when you repeatedly answer cold callers.

How do they get your number? It's baffling.

We are x-directory, but everytime we have moved house, the calls seem to come think and fast and continue for years!

Who is selling the phone numbers? Is it the estate agents? The removal company? The utility suppliers? It seems that the Data Protection Act is not worth the paper it's written on. I've just answered another call on my house phone from an 0208 London number.

"Hello, my name is Senil, how are you today Mrs E...

Awards for Devon engineering projects

Two Devon projects have been recognised by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) South West.

The awards were presented at the ICE Annual Project of the Year Awards in Bristol.

The Community Award was presented to the Exe Estuary Trail project, a cycle and walking route that extends over 16 miles set within the beautiful and sensitive backdrop of the Exe Estuary, on Devon’s south coast. It was described by judges as ‘an excellent example of a civil engineering project which benefits the community in a number of ways’

This year the judges also felt that a very high...

Speak up... for the love of?

I grew up in a society where our values – the principles which influence and shape our relationships – were determined in general by education. For my generation, the learning which took place at home, school, or in church and college, for example, was formative in developing who we have become as human beings. In this environment, we learned that personal bonds and friendships offered us boundaries in which we could give and take.

Furthermore, we were aware that who we were also partly determined who other people were too, whether in nearby communities or distant countries. We...
