#1 – Action Speaks Louder Than Words

Fact: we are a direct product of what we do, not what we say. Yes, it’s good to talk about your life plans and what you want to do. But without turning these words into meaningful, directed actions, your words are hollow and sadly mean very little. You need to set yourself clear goals, even writing them down if this helps, and get busy achieving them. No excuses. Don’t wait for everything to be perfect before you take action – you’ll be waiting forever. This will only result in a lifetime of regrets. So what are you waiting for?

#2 – You Have To Take The Good With The Bad

We’re all realists, right? So we can’t expect that life is going to be sweet all of the time. Fact: you’ll need to experience failures, the bad times, as they are an absolute must on the path towards the good times and successes. Although it might be hard to do at the time, treat any failure as a friend who is there to teach you how what you did led to what you got and how to adapt what you do next time to achieve a better outcome in the future. Your role in all of this? Listen to the lessons of your failures, learn from them and make the necessary changes. The lows you experience will make the highs all the more sweeter.

#3 – You Must Surround Yourself With The Right People

We probably all know somebody who has the ability to sap the energy from us, whether at work or socially. They may even be downright nasty, taking pleasure in putting others down. It might seem pretty obvious, but it’s vital to distance ourselves from these positivity hijackers. Okay, at work this may be more difficult to do but we can still take steps to limit out interactions with them. We need to surround ourselves with people who love and support us and have our best interests at heart so that we can reap the fruits from these relationships. Is this a one way thing? Of course not. Do the same for them and inspire each other to become the best versions of yourselves you can possibly be.

#4 – To Be Happy, You Have To Learn To Love Yourself

If we want to fulfil your potential in life, we absolutely have to learn to be nice to ourselves. Life can be full of hard knocks which have the potential to negatively affect us and it’s all too easy to become trapped in a cycle of believing we’re worth very little. We’re worth as much as we believe we’re worth and our value is determined by no one other than ourselves. We must focus on our positives, not the negatives. On our successes whilst learning from any failures encountered on the rocky road to achievement. Someone can seemingly have everything: money, fantastic job, great friends and a loving family, but still feel desperately unhappy as happiness starts from within, from recognising our uniqueness and loving the most important person in our lives. Us!

#5 – Money Is No Measure Of Success

We too often try to live our lives the way our materialistic, consumer-driver society expects us to, often looking towards money as a gauge of success. Yes, we need money to be able to survive but is it really the be all and end all? No way! Just think of the number of people who have plenty of money but work in a job they dread getting up for every morning and that consumes way too much of their time. Surely happiness is a true measure of success. And this comes from having the time to create enjoyable, meaningful experiences with those who we love and care about. It’s time to step back, refocus and ask ourselves: what makes us happy?

#6 – Your Health Is Everything

Our general health and well-being is something we all take for granted. That is until it fails. When we have our health, we have the potential to have everything we’ve ever wanted but when we don’t, nothing else matters at all. So it’s amazing how many people neglect their health and fail to look after themselves as they should do, often doing little to preserve and enhance it. Yes, life’s pretty manic but that’s no excuse for not making time for regular exercise, eating healthily, getting enough good quality sleep and taking essential downtime to keep stress levels in check. Start now. Make the changes and let sound health and fitness be the springboard to achieve anything we want to!

#7 – Perfection Is Impossible

Of course, we all want to do the best we can and be the best we can be but we have to be realistic, right? Perfection is an illusion and a goal which can only lead to disappointment as we’re always going to fall short of our own unattainable expectations. We need to go easy on ourselves and take credit for what we are achieving rather than beating ourselves up over what we’re not. That’s certainly not to say that we shouldn’t strive for excellence – we should. We have to. But perfectionism is that one step too far and psychologically, it can even lead to depression when goals aren’t reached. We should enjoy the journey towards the realistic goals we set ourselves, take pleasure in their achievement and accept that we’re not perfect. Nobody is.

#8 – You Reap What You Sow

This Bible verse is a fundamental principle of life and one which should guide us on a daily basis. Put simply, we can only expect the rewards of life if we take positive actions to attain them. On the flipside, negative behaviour will result in little positivity and often distrust and ill-feeling directed towards us. Yes, we must set ourselves goals. Yes, we have to sow the seeds of hard work and discipline to work towards those goals. Yes, we should build positive relationships with others along the way. But not at any cost. It might seem overly simple, but the success we achieve in life is proportional to the quality and quantity of effort we put in. There really are no excuses for falling short of our own expectations when we know we could have done more in the first place

#9 – You Must Embrace Change To Thrive

Change can be scary but is inevitable. It’s essential. Sometimes we can influence it. Sometimes not. Yes, we can settle for the status quo and plod along in the comfort of familiarity, but with that nagging feeling that we really could be getting more from life. So what’s stopping us? Probably a lack of willingness to change. But how on earth are we going to get what we want without actively instigating and embracing change? We mustn’t be just like everyone else, moaning whenever our comfortable little situation is upset by some form of change. We have to welcome it. Draw energy from it. Exploit it to benefit from it. That’s what successful people do.

#10 – Fear Must Be Faced Head On

Fear is a normal emotion we all feel and in some situations it can lead to complete paralysis. The result? Avoidance. Fear is often an excellent indicator of what we truly need and desire in our lives. It’s all well and good avoiding situations which bring about fear, but it is often these very situations which must be tackled head on. In doing so, we will become empowered as we prove to ourselves that we can look fear in the eye and defeat it. Let it be our compass on the path to self-fulfilment. The more we do this, the more we will achieve, the more confident we will feel and the less we will fear in the future. It really is a no-brainer. To be imprisoned by fear is to live half a life.
