Devon beach education company in top UK 100

Devon’s Beach Schools South West company – which puts the coast onto the educational curriculum – has been honoured at 10 Downing Street after being recognised by an organisation promoting small businesses.

The not-for-profit community company is among 100 across the UK chosen by the organisation Small Business Saturday, which supports and promotes smaller companies.

Beach Schools South West takes children out on to beaches in the region to teach them subjects tied in with the National Curriculum, including ecology, geology and conservation.

The Fishing News Awards 2018 is calling on the public to nominate fishermen, ports, retailers and businesses in categories across all aspects of commercial fishing to celebrate the commitment, skills and innovation of those that have excelled in 2017.

Oakdown Touring and Holiday Caravan Park on the East Devon coast is celebrating reaching the top three in the ‘Holiday Park of the Year’ category of the Devon Tourism Awards.

The awards, which are now in their eighth year, celebrate the best of Devon Tourism.

And the announcement comes at the end of a very busy period for Oakdown, which this year has seen the introduction of shepherd’s huts and a brand new reception area and a redesigned café.

A cafe in Exeter called 'Wild Stuff' has been nominated for a national award which has been launched by Lansinoh. The awards are designed to celebrate places and people across the country supporting breastfeeding mums.   

In 2015, 776,950 babies were born in the UK. Yet just 0.5% of UK mums are breastfeeding their newborn at 12 months, despite recommendations from the World Health Organisation to continue breastfeeding into your baby's second year. With British breastfeeding rates among the worst in the world, could the culprit be society’s attitudes towards breastfeeding?

Exeter manager named regional winner in care awards

An Exeter care professional has been announced as a national finalist by one of the UK’s biggest providers of homecare services, Bluebird Care.

Jackie Fyall, who has been working as a registered manager in Bluebird Care’s Exeter office, was a national runner up in the Registered Manager of the Year category at the 2017 Bluebird Care Awards last week. At the awards, Jackie received the title Regional Registered Manager of the Year.

Action on Hearing Loss award remembers ‘wonderful’ volunteer

A much-loved volunteer for national charity Action on Hearing Loss was posthumously awarded the Passion in Action accolade for her dedication to the cause.

Enid Radford, fondly known as D, has been an information stand volunteer for the charity in Exeter since 2008, but she sadly passed away earlier this year.

As a hearing aid user for many years, Enid had a real passion for spreading the charity’s messages about hearing loss, deafness and tinnitus to the wider public.

The fishing industry in the South West has been recognised, as individuals and businesses from the region landed five prizes in the UK’s only awards ceremony celebrating the commercial fishing industry, the Fishing News Awards.

A strong performance from the region saw success in a range of categories. Brixham once again enjoyed success in 2017, holding on to its crown of ‘Port of the Year’, thanks to its comprehensive range of services and high quality, diverse and sustainable produce.

Stagecoach South West has announced that the South West Falcon, its 24/7 coach service connecting Plymouth, Exeter, Bristol Airport and Bristol City Centre, has been shortlisted at the UK Coach Awards 2017 for ‘Making Coaches a Better Choice’.

The announcement comes just over a month after the service celebrated its first anniversary. It further reinforces that the Falcon is delivering an innovative product, quickly establishing itself as an integral part of the region’s transport infrastructure.

Cofton Achieves national recognition

Cofton Country Holidays, the multi award-winning holiday park near Dawlish, South Devon, has received official confirmation that it will receive one of the highest accolades in the world of camping and caravanning at the AA’s Caravan and Camping Awards on 20th March. 

The holiday park, which has 450 caravan and tent pitches, including over 50 hardstanding pitches, will receive its AA 5 Pennant Gold accreditation at the official ceremony and could be in line for one of two other awards, which include AA Regional Campsite of the Year for the South West and AA Campsite of the Year.
