Police advice following serious motorcycle collisions

Following three serious motorcycle collisions in the south Devon area, police are appealing for road users to be more vigilant. The three separate incidents all happened on Friday 19 April leaving the riders of the machines with serious injuries. During the afternoon, at Torquay Road at Kingskerswell, the road was closed for over six hours to allow investigations to take place into a collision between the rider of a 600cc Suzuki and a car, where the rider remains in a serious condition in hospital. Later that afternoon at Downton Cross near Dittisham, the rider of a 750cc Kawasaki was...

Local school children get closer to nature

Last month over 200 school children braved the winter snow and rain to join the South Devon National Trust Rangers for their fortnight of schools activities.

Year 5 and 6 pupils from seven local schools travelled to the National Trust sites at East Soar Farm and Wembury beach, where stream and pond dipping, gorse cutting and scavenger hunts were all on the agenda.

The first week, which was unseasonably cold, was held at East Soar Farm, with Kingsbridge, Loddiswell, Malborough and Stokenham primary schools all attending. Thankfully the team had use of the East Soar Farm...

Archaeologists widen search at South Devon Link Road site

Archaeologists carrying out investigations in advance of the construction of the South Devon Link Road, near Kingskerswell, Devon, have widened their search.

The archaeologists, who uncovered the remains of a 2000-year-old Roman settlement and a stone-constructed medieval building in December last year, will now be undertaking a further assessment along the rest of the planned route of the new road, to establish archaeological potential.

Archaeologists have just discovered another medieval building at Edginswell Lane: pottery found at the site indicates that it dates to the...

Help needed for underwater habitats and wildlife

The Marine Conservation Society (MCS), the UK’s leading marine charity, says reefs, eelgrass beds, cuttlefish, crawfish and short snouted seahorses are among the south Devon underwater habitats and wildlife that need better protection from damaging activities.

Two areas of the county’s coastal waters are among 31 that are currently the focus of a Government public consultation and could be designated as Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) later this year.

But MCS says that the Torbay and Skerries Bank (southeast of Start Point) proposed MCZs will only benefit from protection...

Police and students to restore classic police car

Police and students in south Devon have undertaken a drive to restore a police car to its former glory.

The 1999 Ford Escort was retired out of police service in early 2006 and lay unused and deteriorating until 2008 when it was acquired by the police Heritage and Learning Resource (the Historic Collections of Devon & Cornwall Police) based in Okehampton.

In 2011 a sponsorship deal was struck with three local companies who agreed to supply restoration materials and the car was taken to South Devon College in Paignton who had agreed to supply the labour to return the car...

Review concludes that care home fee levels for 2012/13 are fair

Devon County Council has today published an extended impact assessment into its decision on care home fees for 2012/13, in response to a High Court ruling that it hadn't given sufficient consideration to equalities.

The gold-plated assessment required by the Court has resulted in no change to the current fee structure or levels that gave an average 8.6 per cent increase to home owners.

However, the Council has also lodged an Appeal against the High Court ruling, in order to draw a line in the sand over future legal challenges and put a stop to “excessive, costly and...

South Devon community comes together to tackle storm damage

The track from the village of South Huish to the National Trust car park at South Milton Sands in South Devon is now open again following a dynamic response from the local community.

The devastating Valentine’s Day storm destroyed the track and around two thirds of the sand dunes. Boardwalks and fencing were also torn up and the beach was littered with debris. The beach was still accessible from the village of South Milton but not from neighbouring South Huish.

Following the storm, the National Trust held a meeting with key stakeholders to discuss the damage and hear...
