Endangered turtle washed up on Devon beach

A rare, warm water Kemp’s Ridley turtle has washed up on Woolacombe Beach, North Devon.

The small dead turtle was reported to the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) on Tuesday 28 January.

Just 30cm in length, the creature is not the first Kemp’s ridley to be washed up along the UK coastline this winter. According to Dr Peter Richardson, MCS Biodiversity Programme Manager: "Two weeks ago, another Kemp’s ridley was discovered on a beach in Carmarthenshire by a woman out walking her dogs. In December, a Kemp’s ridley washed up alive in South West Wales but died shortly after....

Bathing water quality across the South West is at its best for seven years.

Out of 145 designated bathing waters sampled in the South West Water region, covering Devon, Cornwall and Lyme Regis in Dorset, 144 or 99.3% met or exceeded the minimum European water quality standard and 132 or 91% met the tighter guideline standard.

This is a significant improvement on last year’s results, when 133 or 91% met the minimum standard and 91 or 62% met guideline.

Before South West Water’s Clean Sweep programme closed 250 crude sewage outfalls across the region, at a cost of...

About 50 tonnes of oil spilled into the sea off Rayong province Saturday morning after a leak sprung in a pipeline operated by PTT Global Chemical Plc, a subsidiary of state-owned oil and gas company PTT Plc, the AP reported.

Hundreds of people, including navy personnel, environment officials and villagers were battling to clean the oil from...

The Exeter Daily wants YOUR summer photographs... before it's too late

Just last month Brits were flocking to the travel agents in a last ditched attempt to get some sun.

Throughout our supposed summer England had seen nothing but rain and grey skies.

However, for the last few weeks we have been experiencing a heat wave, and on 7 July, Exeter experienced temperatures similar to those in Turkey.

'The Guardian' reported at the beginning of the month that the rise in temperature has seen a rise in retail sales. Playsuits, shorts and bikinis are finally being sold after sitting on the shelves during the previous cold months....

Exeter Chiefs have been getting stuck into their pre-season programme for a couple of weeks now, but today they headed to the seaside for a different sort of work-out with the club’s conditioning staff.

Whereas much of the initial work has been centered around the club’s Sandy Park, this time the Chiefs playing squad popped along to nearby Exmouth Beach for a series of testing drills.

From sand dune shuttles to grappling, heavyweight lifting to ball work, it seems no pebble was left unturned as Rob Baxter’s team geared themselves up for the new 2013/14 season.

The RSPCA have expressed concerns after more dead birds have been washed up on beaches in Devon and Cornwall.

There have been reports of birds being washed up at Wembury and Heybrook Bay in Devon as well as Port Wrinkle and Whitsand in Cornwall. On Saturday, the RSPCA said that for all the affected birds found washed up on land, it was likely "more are dying out in the Channel".

Dead and alive birds were...

Call to arms: help clean up our beaches

Two beautiful Devon beaches, Mansands and Scabbacombe near Brixham and Kingswear, are looking worse for wear as a result of the recent poor weather conditions.

The National Trust English Riviera rangers who care for this stretch of coast and countryside are holding a beach clean to tidy them up. As the saying goes, many hands make light work, so why not come and join in?

Local National Trust ranger Tim Bumby explains: ‘Due to recent storms and strong easterly winds there is a lot of rubbish and debris, such as fishing nets and rope, lying on the beaches. Because of this we...
