Fresh measures are being taken by Teignbridge District Council to dissuade pigeons from nesting underneath Teignmouth’s iconic Pier.

Teignbridge District Council, with the support of the owners of Teignmouth Pier, is trialling a bird scarer to deter birds from roosting under the structure where their droppings fall into the sea or the sands below and ultimately end up affecting bathing water quality.

The trial will run from today (Friday 2 January 2015) for a month during daytime hours. It forms part of the Love Your Beach campaign which encourages people to protect the...

Work to reinstate the depleted shingle on Sidmouth’s Main Beach will start early in the New Year, now that East Devon District Council has received approval for the job and funding has been agreed.

The council announced in October that it was looking into the possibility of accessing Government funding to reinstate both Main Beach and East Beach to the levels they were at before last winter’s storms. Work will go ahead early in the New Year on Main Beach, whilst East Beach has already been improved by natural shingle movement.

Councillor Andrew Moulding, the council’s...

A big beach recycling scheme to help protect Teignmouth seafront from future storm damage gets underway today.

Specialist diggers and bulldozers will move 10,000 tonnes of sand from the estuary side of The Point Spit to the sands in the front of The Point car park.

Beaches act as giant sponges soaking up wave energy and this reshaping of the beach will give it a protective healthy layer in readiness for any future winter storms like those that hit the South Devon coastline in February.

The work starts today (21 October) and will take three weeks. The work has been...

Work to reinstate the depleted shingle beaches in front of the town and below the cliffs at East Beach in Sidmouth could start within a month - if East Devon District Council can obtain approval for the job and funding to pay for it.

This is an opportunity to access Government funding to reinstate the Main Beach and East Beach to the levels they were at before last winter’s storms.

Councillor Andrew Moulding, the council’s deputy leader and chairman of a group looking at longer term coastal defence issues for Sidmouth, said: “This is a window of opportunity to provide the...

East Devon District Council is pleased to report that so far this year most dog owners are obeying the various dog control measures on beaches.

Everyone wants to enjoy the beach, particularly in warm summer weather, and it is quite possible for all users to get along together if everyone is considerate to others.

Details of the Dog Ban areas are shown on the large signs that are easy to see at the main entrances to the beaches, and also by checking the East Devon website. Regardless of any official restrictions, all dog owners must always behave responsibly with their dogs...

Sign up for the Great British Beach Clean

The UK’s leading marine charity, the Marine Conservation Society (MCS), says recent figures showing the highest amounts of litter on British beaches in 20 years have prompted it to launch a mass beach participation event The Great British Beach Clean.

The charity is looking for volunteers to put their names forward, ready to make this the biggest event of its kind in September.

Plastic bottles and carrier bags, condoms, nappies, balloons, and tiny plastic pieces can be found on almost every beach in the UK – either washed up, blown there or dropped. Our beaches have never...
